Disco 2 Torque Converter

Hello,

I was thinking about getting a HD torque converter for my DynaChip stage 1 remapped TD5 Automatic. Something like this: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.c...nverters/td5-heavy-duty-torque-converter.html

Consequently I was wondering whom has done something similar and if so if it's worth it?

I never have but I would. The std one revs straight past peak torque. What were they thinking?

I think he means that the stall speed of the standard torque converter is way higher than the peak torque band of the engine so you get the speedboat revving.
The HD torque converter matches the stall speed to the engine better.

Do you guys know where I can get one? Ashcroft's don't have any in stock

Also will this give me better MPG also?

I've heard that it does help MPG by holding gears better and making better use of the available torque. I've also heard it makes things worse by tempting you to boot it!

If memory serves I think that the Ashcroft's HD TC is a D2 V8 TC which has been machined to accept a 3 hole triangular flex plate (v8 one is a square 4 hole plate).

No better MPG actually MPG will be worse. Because you will drive like a chav/boy racer with all that new HP.

never thought there was a problem with mine as a std set up ,if you go too far car wont be any quicker as you will be trying to deliver power as boost falls off

I find the standard auto very revvy and I think lots of people feel the same. Lots of sound but not much action.
I think auto is the better option on a lump the size of a disco but the torque converter and engine could have been better matched.

i think partly it keeps turbo speed up and less strain on low gears in the auto ,they dont like the harsh diesel torque, mine is std but does pull away if you put your foot down

Yeah after tuning mine pulls away and even wheel spins if the car has just me in. Problem is it runs at 2800rpm most the time unless I do some fancy peddle tapping. Been told apart from extra torque the HD converter will keep the rpm low so better mpg

Also they messaged today saying they are back in stock

Sorry. I meant the shell kind - as in the old joke of driving with an egg under your foot to stop you pushing too hard on the accelerator pedal.

hmmmm garage has quoted me 6 hours work to fit my torque converter £432 + £315 for the part is a bit pricey for this month

Have you had your engine remapped? The lower revs would be worth it but at 7-800 squid for parts and labour it's a bit pricey without any huge benefit
