L322 Torque converter or gearbox

Hi all
So I know this has been covered but wondered if anyone has a view with my particular circumstances. Car is a 2004 TD6
I'm getting a judder around 53mph to 60mph under light acceleration, doesn't do it under medium or more acceleration, and goes away completely if I knock it into sport mode,
In sport mode it does it around 67mph under the same acceleration.
It feels like it happens as soon as it locks out.
I understand this could be the lock out clutch in the torque converter,
I've flushed the gearbox and changed the filter, the old oil was clean and no debris was on the magnets.
It's also worth mentioning I have receipts for a replacement gearbox 20,000 miles ago although this could have been a used box and not new or recon, torque converter wasn't changed at this time.
I don't mind putting in a torque converter but I feel if it needs a gearbox then it's not worth the expense as the mileage is 220000
I did post similar symptoms some time back but have done a fair amount of reading up on it and it seems to me that tc is the most likely culprit but I'm open to views that might point towards the gearbox.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated
 
Usual problem with these boxes is torque converter lockup plates breaking up. If left to fester that will cause debris to destroy the valve block which on these boxes is made from soft cheese. At 220,000 i will be willing to bet it has had a couple of gearboxes and converters unless someone has been very lucky. The original usually fails around 100,000 miles or so. But i suppose there will be exceptions depending on how the car is driven.

Yes it's had 1 new replacement at around 100k and another replacement at 200k. Up until I got it a few months ago it was a 1 owner car.
Sounds to me that it'll be worth doing the torque converter as the box change smooth and the oil is clean just the vibrations I mentioned.
Anyone have a write up on how to change the t/c and how long the job takes?

In a garage on a ramp with all the gear i would think around six hours.
 
That's sounds ok. I'm happy to spend a day doing it. Would you know if you remover the transfer box from the gearbox or leave it attached? Does anyone have rave and does it have a "how to" guide? I imagine it's fairly straight forward but handy to know in case I miss something

A garage would possibly not do that, it depends on your facilities. Two pairs of hands are better than one. Everything is fairly straight forwards IF you know what you are doing. If you don't it can end in a world of pain.
 
If your on your own, may be of help to remove transfer box just from a weight point of view. But that said, even wrestling the gearbox out is best with 4 hands unless you have a good gearbox jack
 
I'll most likely have assistance at some point but will have to see. I've done clutched etc in the past so hopefully will be ok. I've got plenty of time this week so I won't need to rush it

Hmm I know the car did have an injector issue not long before I got it. Any thoughts on the best way to diagnose injectors? It does have a big judder on tickover and does have some odd Judders at other speeds but I put that down to the mileage

I had mine sent away to get checked. Although , the giveaway that it wasn't the TC was when she was started juddering , whilst in park, at just over 2000rpm, when the auto-electrician came to do the spin diagnostic. Although as stated previously, she wouldnt bloody do it again when I took her to Gibsons.
 
Did yours stop juddering if you knocked it into sport mode? Thats the bit that makes me think torque converter rather than anything else
 
Yeah I read and see what a nightmare you had. I think because the t/c and gearbox are a week area then it's the obvious place to lay the blame but as you've found out it's not always the case. I'll get the injectors checked first.
Was yours rough at idle? Mine is very lumpy on Tickover and judders in reverse which I think is a misfire so injector fault definitely adds up
 
She actually wasn't too bad apart from the vibrations BUT 2yrs ago I had to have engine recon'd due to not catching an injector fault quickly enough. Since I stopped running up and down to the South of England she doesn't do a lot of miles, so faults take time to show, and it that case it was too long. She was juddering around 30mph coming off the bypass, booked her in for diagnostics and it was too late. The injector had been playing up for a while but because I was doing little jaunts to town I hadn't felt it.
Testing injectors cost about £90 , which beats the hell out of TC replacement if that's all it is. Might not be but I'd say mine is a cautionary tale of blaming something just because it's 'usually'that.
 
I think it'll definitely be worth looking at. The vibration at 54 when the clutch locks out sounds exactly the same as mine. Hard to imagine it could be anything other than transmission related as it does it the second the clutch lock out but just goes to show.
Did yours only do it on slight throttle? Mine is fine if I'm accelerating fairly quickly. Just judders if I try to accelerate gently once the clutch has locked out
 
Yep light throttle and when lock up clutch engaged. Which was confusing as @holidaychicken had TC issue which happened when LUC wasn't engaged. Also did it on loading @ 30mph. The TC was on it's way out and it needed done when it was. The issue was the vibration continued after trans recon, 2 replacement TCs and a complete valve body replcement.
If you are lucky it might be the injector, if you are unlucky , you might have my issue, of one problem hiding another. So even if you check the injectors and find a problem, there is no guarantee ghe TC doesn't need recon'd , or vice versa.
Fingers crossed for you that it is just an injector issue.
 
Yeah I had read that the t/c issue usually happens before lock up just didn't really know where else to look but sounds like the injectors will be my first thing to check. Thanks for your help
