Scotland,
Hi guys/girls, there are a few posts ref the prop shaft but I can't see one that answer my questions. Is it worth getting the rear prop shaft fabricated, rather than paying silly money to the stealers or dealers, as it's OEM only? If it is, does anyone on here do it , work for someone who does it, or know of a reputable firm who does it up to the standard required?
Having spoken to the guys who will be replacing it, one of them had a company in Edinburgh fabricate a prop shaft for his RRS but it wasn't up to standard. As he had already had an earlier one made which also wasn't up to standard, he's obviously not a fan of fabrication but it's not a route I've written off completely........yet ;):)
Thanks in advance.

Waits for Ant on his white stead..................

Afternoon GR.....Hope I didn't make you wait too long :D:D:D:D

Why do you need a replacement shaft??

Only people I know of are a company round the corner from where I used to work....

http://www.propshaft-services.co.uk/

They are a specialist prop maker and can make shafts up to spec, repair or remanufacture existing shafts, etc....might be worth a call, I know it is in Feltham, but there are such things as couriers :D:D:D

Not at all dear Sir :D

Because the guys at Gibsons said so? After checking the car over last week there apparently is play at one of the joints (bit hazy on details at moment as was taking in all the other details). He showed me the part on screen and aparently it is an OEM part that comes complete, rather than being able to get the bit that is causing it to have play?

I'll give them a call once I speak to the guys again and know exactly what the issue is.

Thanks to you and your white steed :D:D:D

Normally you just change the Spicer-joint. Or is the L322 different?

People change axles for Salisbury axles on the Defender and Disco so there must be someone making stronger props or at least different props out there?

I haven't heard of the propshaft being a major problem for the L322. You may well be able to get a good serviceable shaft from a breakers
It's a route I considered but spoke to the guys at Gibsons and they reckoned not a viable risk to take. At this point I'm gathering information to work out what is best.

I now have full details. What I need is a UJ repair if possible. Or complete unit. Problem is with UJ as LR crimp rather than lug. Apparently can be 'repaired' so it goes back in socket but usual place doesn't do L322. So come on Ant & Co ;) lead me unto a decent company who can repair my poorly prop-shaft :)

Yes, this has been posted before, what a con. I think Ford went down that road many years ago, but their u/j's were the same size as other models so once you got them out and the new one in, a few tack weld's did the job.
Yep definitely a con but what can you do, the thing needs fixing, so wallet out and money gone :(

The Golden girl is going to Gibsons tomorrow, to have propshaft taken off and sent away to get U/J repaired. They are sending it to company that they have used for their own vehi les including a G- wagon.
As more and more of us are getting to stage of needing this sorted I will give name later when i remember. Repair is looking at £235 ish including VAT and courier, then labour to be added. Still better than £600 plus for new prop.
I also spoke to some companies in Scotland who stated they could do the repair, if anyone wants the names. Only reason it's going down South is because of recommendation from Alan Gibson.
