Just changed the auto box oil cooler and two pipes, now got to top the auto box up...just want to make sure I have the right 'hole' as it isn't mentioned in the manual.

Can someone just confirm I've got the right place - photo below.

Also - anyone know what size the hex head is before I waste money buying the wrong size!

well thats just plain silly, thats a case of backwards development!!!

Spent bloody ages searching for it - plus auto box levels are not mentioned anywhere in the manual. Finally discovered somewhere online on an obscure website that the later P38's don't have one!

from memory,it,s a size 6 allan key,but i wondn,t be surprised if they all have different sizes being built by landrover.filling to the right level can be a pain though

Sorted it this morning - was a bit dark last night by the time I'd fitted everything. Had to cut one of the pipes off in the end to undo one end.

Fill plug key is 8mm on mine.

I had measured how much ATF came out during the change, so I knew approx how much to put back in! Took about 1/2l more than that.

For anyone else doing the same thing (took me a while to find this!), correct procedure from Ashcroft for filling is to top it up until it comes out of the fill hole, then put the transfer box into neutral so there is no load on the auto box, start the engine and keep topping up until it comes out of the fill hole again - run the box up and down the gears, fill again until it is 'full' if necessary. Then run the vehicle forwards, backwards, up and down the gears and check levels again with the box in neutral - fill again if necessary.

Running much better now. Pickup is much quicker now from cold - used to take a bit of a rev to get it moving before when cold, so assume the box was a bit low. Anyway, happy that she's back on the road again now!
