Not sure where to put this question and I guess it has been done to death in the past as well.

Like many gutter-spannerers, I have amassed a motley selection of tools, distributed around the garage in various old cantilever tool boxes and buckets. I have now built a new triple garage/workshop and wish to invest in a good value DIYers roller tool chest. I have not got the money for a SnapOn and have been watching eBay and Gum Tree for ages now with nothing suitable seemingly coming up, so maybe it's time to consider buying a new one.

Some time ago I looked at the Halfords range but wasnt overly impressed and am now currently thinking along the line of the Hilka Classic 16 Drawer Mobile Combination unit available from Wickes at £500.
Has anybody any experience of Hilka or comments regarding choice of a roller cabinet tool boxes in general.

Any input would be gratefully received.

Know the feeling when trying to find tools that are located every where , lol

SGS have regular offers with the drawer tool boxes , have heard good things about them

They did have some that were marked or had a slight mark which wouldn’t bother me , but I missed there sale

I find that the boxes tend to sit against a wall and never move.
Pretty much negates the reason for a box on wheels in the first place.
I've gone back to shadow boards for spanners, etc., and keep my socket sets in the box they came in rather than transferring everything onto socket bars and the like to put in a tool cabinet drawer. I still have a smart tool chest but tend to keep the fiddly items and some specialist bits in that. It sits in the corner of the garage.
 
Check out what's on offer at Machine Mart. With any of these tool chests, try pushing down in the drawers as you move them in and out. Most of them are ok with no weight in them but the cheaper ones bind when loaded. The money is in the runners.

That certainly looked and sounded the business but unfortunately I received this reply from Costco when enquiring about the product:
Unfortunately this item is now deleted and will not be returning to our stores. *please note this is always subject to change*

Nothing wrong with the Halford chest. I can vouch for them personally. And the thing is, you end up rarely moving it.
Once you've cleared a place for it in the garage, it stays there most of the time.

Maybe worth a visit to a store if there is one near you. Their instore stock is sometimes different from their online stock. Problem is, you need to be a member (think its about £30/year now). Or you may know someone who is a member and go with them.
 
I have 20 odd tool boxes but tools still end up on bench or table or boot of cars, simple solution I did recently which you can do the same if you roof joists are exposed internally is to attach two tee hinges to a joist and mount a piece of plyboard or contiboard the width between joists, on this board I set out rows of screws depth set on cordless drill so as not to puncture back of board from which all my spanners, molegrips, box spanners are hung.When not in use board folds /hinges up to a closed position out of sight and out of away, much tidier and I know where everything is, would up load photos but don't know how from phone on here
 
I brought a Clarke ‘professional’ ball bearing runner one from machine mart on a vat free weekend. Cost about £200 and has about 15 draws or so (bigger are available). I have had it nearly 4 years and it’s held up well, despite being reversed into twice.

I still use a bucket when carrying tools other places though!

I've been using those Gorilla tubs for a while now, as I have stuff to do here in Leicester and over in Wales, as they're a bit bigger than buckets and are slightly flexible. They're 'themed' too, so one has welding stuff, one has cordless drills and impact drivers, one has plumbing stuff and so on. Of course, I tell myself I should take them out and put them in the proper place in the shed or in the tool box, but then as I'll be needing them again in a week or two's time, I tend to leave them in the tubs. Not very efficient storage, but there you go.
 
For what it’s worth I’ve got the Halfords pro tool chest set and I can’t fault it. The top chest was dented so I got the whole set for £200

cheap / weak metal, poorly made etc they have no consistency to manufacture or closer to the point procurement,
seems they buy cheap and brand as own etc same as neilson / blue spot / silverline etc
