Too much oil?

Since mine ( TD4 2003) came back from the local expert, I've notice oil spots on the driveway.

It was in for a new clutch - engine out to gain access.

The pipe that receives the dipstick had a build up of oil on it - also looks like oil has been hitting the fan - resulting in a nice oil spray.

The oil level is high - too high to actually see a clear line on the dipstick.

Could there be too much oil - could it rise up and out of the dipstick pipe?

there may be too much oil in it. However, as a matter of urgency, I would check the crancase breather filter. If it becomes blocked, it allows the oil circulation system to become pressurised, one of the symptoms being oil being forced out of the dipstick.

net result is dead turbo and dead engine if left unchanged.

if you do a search on this forum, you'll find lots written about it.

good luck.

Thanks for your help - only had the FL for a few months and, from review of the serice book and associated invoices that I've been passed, it doesn't look like there's been a lot of regular servicing going on.

I'll get in in for a service this week and make sure the crankcase breather filter is replaced.

I'll try the "removing the dipstick whilst engine idling" test ( i'll not do this outside my house) .

I'd love to - unfortunately I'm just not mechanically minded ( although I'm learning a lot from this forum), would be happy to learn, but just don't have the time. I have young family, so my "free" time is precious.

Happy I've found a local specialist that sorted me out with the clutch change recently. I let hime take care of things - at least I'll know how long I'm going to be wihout it.
