Too much engine oil

Just checked my engine oil in my TD4 and for some reason it's overfilled by about 1 litre. I know it's not advisable to overfill it, but should it be ok?

Well I've since taken a litre out as I decided not to risk it.

over fill is bad news

Too much engine oil can cause excess pressure and blow the head gasket.

How long would it take to cause damage? I probs did near 40 miles in total with 1 litre too much engine oil. Doesn't help that I live on a hill.

I wouldn't worry then, most people drive with an overfill for ages. But that it's bad news for the engine is for sure and a good thing you removed the extra liter. When I do an oilchange I stop at 5 liters and then little by little, and always checking in-between, I add up till the max. and normally it's a little below 6 liters (between 5-1/2 and 5-3/4) I have to use. (not at all the 6.8 as in the book)
