To cam or not to cam.

I thought the only recommended cam for the RRs for both GEMS and THOR was the standard one.

YIn the ansence of any other improvements, you might get slightly more bhp from a warmer cam, but it will be at the expense of torque and vice versa.

Or have I been reading the wrong articles?

I am genuinely interested as I am about to do the same thing, but I don't want to compromise my engine in any way so am leaning very much to keeping it standard.

go for the piper gems kit from RPi - everything is there.

dave id keep your money engine sounds perfectly fine to me

Yeah. Since putting the new plugs in, it's running a dream. Will still be looking to change the cam in the summer. Like the idea of the piper kit. Improved low and mid range torque. Always useful around the town. Dont do much motorway driving. So anything to improve town driving would be great.

You will also get better mpg - because the engine is creating more torque from take-off you will find you can ease back a bit on the throttle opening.

This is why the Overfinch Chevy-engined cars gave better fuel economy than the Rover V8's in normal driving - the huge amounts of torque gave so much grunt that the engines don't have to work nearly as hard.

My Overfinch Disco(RIP), despite being stroked to 6.3 litres, consistently returned 20 mpg, and even 22 on one trip when I used the the cruise control.

Everyone goes on about power output figures - in the 4x4 world it is torque that counts.
