Hi all, I'm a bit of a lurker on here across several forums...Series Defender and Discovery.

I'm after a bit of advice and opinion

I have a '68 Series 2a with very poor paint and various different colours having changed the panels over the years to try and get away from chequer plate filler and splits

So I'm at a cross roads now as to whether I sand down etch prime and hand paint as best as I can or strip the rest of the paint off and polish the aluminium to a lowish shine....I've seen a few over the years and secretly the 'pimp my ride' side of me quite likes it.

My question .....though I'm a big fan of do what you want it's your Landy will I knock the value badly if I polish her up or if I do a hand paint job....I can't afford to properly spray paint her. She's a bit of a bitsa with a tdi in her and as few of the panels are original

Hope you don't mind such a question

You will probably find a lot of filler and holes if you strip back to ali, I would look at the posts on here about roller painting which would give you a nice overall finish for not as much effort as trying to get a polished finish which would fade anyway.

Whilst I like the bare ali look, I'm not so sure how it would bear up in the long term with salty roads etc. as the bulkhead and front panel are steel, you would need to paint these anyway.

My vote would be to either roller paint or brush paint with a high quality brush and decent paint. I think you can buy special enamel paint for brush painting that hardly leaves brush strokes. worth googling some specialist paint suppliers

Thanks to you both...I'd completely forgotton about rollers which will improve the final result. I'd done quite a lot of research on coach painting and read the great website by Stephen Hull (if i've remembered the name correctly)

Have a good weekend

There is a 3rd option we have an airless paint sprayer (basically a small hoover that blows instead of sucking) its a bloody marvel and dead easy to use!

I used aesops matt nato green paint and quality brush and roller. No synthetic brushes or car boot rollers! Looked ok. Matt finish does wonders for hiding dents:cool:

Thanks Removals and thanks Ronsealdeath I've never heard of airless equipment. ...I'll look into it. Matt paint....yes it will be more forgiving....Having driven many military Landies I've always liked the look..I'll look at aesops

Thanks both
