Tinted windows and the Law

dont even start me on this! been made take my tints off twice now, both times the copper would not measure the light. was a case of peel it off or get it lifted, apparently any form of tint is illegal so when i asked if the vec sri and the jag they had at the scene where also illegal to be on the road as they had both front side windows tinted as standard out the box and if he proves that my tint is illegal then i would happily peel it off and is it also illegal to wear sunglasses guess what, calls recovery truck, good job its my mates who ows the firm contracted to the police and local council innit! knobheads.

Now that is a good point, if its illegal to have tinted front windows, is it illegal to wear sunglasses while driving. Surely there is nothing to check the tint in a pair off sunglasses... mmm interesting. Getting back to the subject matter, checking the VOSA directives dosnt apply, when they state that tinted windows are not part off an MOT inspection, as where i'am in Northern Ireland they run under a diffirent system where tinted windows are part off the MOT system, even though when they tested my windows the vehicle was inside a building. The windows have not got a film over them, according to autoglass, the glass is actually manufactured with a tint, they are factory fitted and they do all have the E euro standard mark. But my appeal may have paid off, i doubt it, i have to take the vehicle back up to the test centre where it is going to have the windows re-tested in the open air. But anyone from Northern Ireland knows that these jobsworths do not like to be prooved wrong. Checking to see if the vehicle requires to have side windows fitted by law. If not im afraid it will be new front windows guys...... anybody know the approximite cost? Got the Disco to go up for her MOT next week.... DAMN!! wait till they get a load of her. Guy told me her wheels and tyres where illegal but she passed the MOT with them on last year so if she fails i will bring down my wrath on the DVLNI's head. Why the hell cant they bring the DVLNI into line with DVLC Swansea anyway. ****es me off makes me want to go out and bite the head off some old womens poodle

Went through all this with a Volvo I bought 2nd hand from the biggest Volvo dealer in Birmingham. Picked up by one of 2 traffic police in West Mids at the time with the light meters.

Asked him what law I was breaking and he quoted a 1968 statute which says that if the windscreen and front drivers and passengers screen let through less than 70% of light then the car was unroadworthy; fortunately the Volvo dealer replaced the windows for me as they had technically supplied me with an unroadworthy car.
Biggest worry of course is the insurance companies, as they will claim the vehicle has been modified and so made unroadworthy and wouldn't pay up on a claim.

Listen guys thanks for all your comments and help and ive got good news that i thought would brighten up your day. I took my Rangie up to the local traffic branch today and they tested my front windows. The bike cop then insisted in following me to the MOT center. When i pulled up the examiner came out to test the tint in the windows and the bike cop just stood there quietly. When the examiner tested the windows, once again they failed on a 64% light coming in. The bike cop watched him then came over with the same type off device and tested it and it came up at a 72% light. He then lectured the examiner and the centre manager on using the equipment wrong, the MOT certificate was issued, the MOT jobsworth was spanked (looked far from happy at being told off) and the centre manager was told to train his staff properly.

RANGE ROVER 1 - MOT JOBSWORTH NILL

Nice - glad this thread had a good outcome. :D

How did the MOT place end up using the equipment wrong though, surely its simple??

Either way, nice result :D

-Wills :)

It seems the meter has to be placed in the centre off the window in open light. The centre staff where placing the meter at the top left corner off the window nearest the roof piller between the front and the rear doors inside a building. It seems that tinted glass has more of a tint as it gets to the edge off the window and the copper says it should be tested where it is going to be needed most hence down more in the direction of the wing mirror. Anyway its nice to get a cop on our side for a change, he even commented to me on the jobsworthness off the examiners. Incidentally he drives a 98 Defender as well lol
