you dont need a timing tool kit, Find a bolt that will screw into your bell housing wading plug hole, grind a tip in the end to lock the flywheel/crank off
then a 6mm (i think) bolt in the cam pulley to lock the cam off and an 8-9mm drill bit in the pump pulley. sorted its the way i do mine and never had a problem. I hope this helps
The cranks got a mark to line up anyway its got a arrow on timing case just above the cam belt pully, u line it up with keyway cam pully got a dot to line up with part of timing cover about the 7-8 oclock position the fuel pump just use a drill bit, how i done mine

i use awading plug with a 5mm drill bit through the middle to locatate on to flywheel

200disco, ignore all that crap...get a proper timing kit! DEFENDER90DAZ was good enough to give me a link to a company on ebay selling them for £30! If you're desperate try and borrow one from a mechanic.
Using a drill bit/fettled bolt is a cowboy way of doing it. If you want to lock your engine/fuel pump in TDC you cant with a drill bit/fettled bolt, it WILL end up a few degrees out of TDC and therefore not in TDC!

I like to do things properly, if the mark on the crank was 'sort of TDC' then yes, use a drill bit. Its not, the mark is TDC, so use a proper timing kit!

my flywheel has 2 notches one at tdc and one at 10 degrees before tdc, how does the kit determin which notch you have it in? You have to align the timing gear and lock each of the pulleys off so it doesnt really matter what you use to lock each one off with. Ive done it without locking any of them off, it was a pig and had to be redone cos i was a tooth out but ive never had a problem timing with the tools (bolts etc) ive made. The op needed something urgent. It would be interesting to hear how he did it in the end

The kit wont determine which notch is correct, you will but the proper kit will lock it correctly! the narrower notch is TDC, spray some florescent paint on it so you know for future reference. Simple
