Has anyone fitted timing gears to a tdi in lieu of a timing belt?
and if so was their any problems encountered whilst carrying out this conversion?

there's been a couple of threads on that conversion - try searching for Zeus Gears.
From memory, the conclusion was that they're expensive crap.

Many thanks for all your replies/comments.
The timing belt is staying.

Good decision.
Those gears sets are catastrophic.
The design is bad, the gear-to-gear principles are bad, the materials are bad, the execution is bad, and the after-sales stinks.

Belts are OK and cheap and cheerful to renew once in a while.

As a matter of interest, if you want an idea of what reliable timing gears should look like, hunt for drawings of the Austin diesel taxi engines.

Now those were GEARS! Those engines routinely covered 500,000 miles between overhauls.
