ive made a stupid schoolboy error. Had the timing belt out of my 2.5na (not sure but think its a 12j engine) and had a mind funk when I put it back together. Got the injector pump and crank lined up at TDC but must have not done so for the pulley for the valves as when I Turned it over to bleed the fuel to the injectors and heard an unusual wump wump noise which I think was perhaps the valves open on a compression stroke.
I ve had a look on other threads about whether I am likely to have damaged the valves but they all deal with broken timing belts on a running engine. As I only briefly turned the engine on the starter might I have got away with not damaging the valves or push rods?

they arent timed at tdc they are timed at exhaust peak no1,just check the push rods

When you have the belt or timing dismantled you should turn the engine over by hand (2 revolutions) once you reassemble it. That will let you feel any obstructions like valves hitting pistons before you hit the starter,
