Hi All,

I am looking to do the timing belt, sounds like such fun to do on my 300tdi fender.

Having read a few posts, I now know I need to be looking at a dayco timing belt, so I am thinking of the allmakes modified kit with tensioner , gasket etc.

But I have also looked for the timing tool kit, well on fleabay they seem to be the same kit in a plastic red box, But the price goes from 25 up to 125 notes!!! does anyone know if there is a good reason for this. is the cheaper one inferior quality? are they all the same? just do not want to get a cheaper kit and find out it is NFG.

so can anyone let me know if they have used the cheap kit and found it to be OK.

Cheers

Great Thanks Mad Hat Man,

just for info , how did you get the dog nut off the crank and retighten, seems like there are various ways,
1) using a breaker bar and the chassis, fuel solly disconnected and crank the engine.
2) using the correct spanner that costs 55 notes.
3) leaving it in gear and having someone stand on the brakes.
4) popping off the sump and jamming a block of wood up there.

to undo I am thinking of trying option 3 first if that does not work then option 1.
to tighten it is going to be option 3

for tensioning of belt I am thinking to use a draper deflection torque wrench. not bad for a tenner.

Thanks for your help, off now to order the cheapo tool kit and timing belt.

Cheers

Just make sure you put the tensioner pulleys in properly. Read my recent post If you haven't already.

I got a flywheel lock pin and fuel pump pin from eBay for about £14 and it's been spot on. Shame about the operator error ;-)

Crank pulley undid with a battery impact gun first time, but after I torqued it properly on reassembly it needed the Mrs on the brakes to get it loose with a breaker bar the second time. The nut gun would not touch it.

Hi Kes,

Thanks, may dig out the air impact gun, just not sure there is enough space to get it in there. If I decide to leave the rad in place.

Read you post and will revisit it once again to check, first is to make sure I got everything I need so that I can get over the issues as they arise, cos I just know it is not going to go smoothly, ( like to look on the dark side ) then if things go well I am well chuffed .

cheers

Well,

Now I am looking at ordering the timing belt kit, looking on LRDirect, I have heard the allmakes brand seems good. but does anyone know the difference between the standard and premium products? or bearmach OE standard, or even ( dare I say it  ) the Britpart OEM standard????

anyone fitted one of the above o get a POV on this before I lay out the Wonga?

Cheers

Oh, Yet another question,

the engine is a 16L , not sure if it has had the modified crank gear and tensioner fitted, will only find out once it is opened.

If I fit a modified kit is this going to be OK with the old timing cover if it was never modified? so what I am asking is when landrover upgraded / changed their design for the tensioner and crank gear, did they also change the timing cover? is there any way to know before I strip it down , not sure I want to pay to replace a timing cover , the kit is £400 pounds , Ouch!

Cheers

if timing case was mis-aligned it would have been going through belts regulary

Hi JM,

Thanks, so if I can fit a modified timing belt kit to an old timing cover with no worries,

So the modified timing covers LR refitted , were they fitted because they had a manufacturing issue?

I was concerned that the modified kit and an old timing cover were not compatible.

I am sure I am worried about nothing , just do not want to cause myself more issues, LOL.

Thanks

Neil

they did have belt pulley issues ,some cases were changed and injection pump support bracket was modified to incorrect tightening couldnt cause issues, just ensure crank pulley has the raised guides and not tensioner,

Thanks JM,

Reason I ask, is that doing a search on what is a very visited issue ( timing belt replacement) someone noted in one of the posts that the old timing cover interfered with the new tensioner, apparently the new tensioner sat further out. Not sure how true this is?

So on I go , time to order the modified timing kit, OEM equivalent not sure which supplier , britpart, bearmach or allmakes? timing kit off of fleabay and a deflection torque wrench.

then it is on with the FUN FUN FUN.

Cheers

ive never come across an issue with timing case only pulleys ,though they did alter those ,some have a spigot on rear of idler to hold tensioner arm others a thick washer

OK, Now I got a weird one,

Just about to start the stripdown and thought I better check my 27mm socket fits the dog nut for depth, well it doesn't because it is 30mm, am I going mad? , should it be 30mm? could have sworn I have seen it is 27mm.

also I cannot find the timing pin hole, wading plug hole is offset, no way it will engage with the timing on the bottom of the crank.

the engine is a 16L, are these different?

Cheers

Crank pulley bolt is definitely 30mm doesn't need to be a long socket, a normal socket and an extension will do.

The locking pin screws into the wading plug hole in the flywheel housing, not the timing cover. Have a look at the YouTube videos for cam belt change if you are not sure. I think they are by "trailer fitters workshop" or something similar.

You don't need to lock the flywheel but it is certain to be right if you do.

Darn it,

Yes you are right Kes, story is do not look at this sort of thing when you head is full of snot, good call on the vids, cheers.

reason I thought it was 27mm is that the LR4X4 write up lists a 27mm, have to dig out the HD 30mm for this job.

all good fun.
