Hi,

We have a 98'R Freelander Xedi 5 door on 122K

Just bought, no mention of timing belt change so best do it ASAP.

Engine Number 20T2N170015634.

Phoned local LR dealer Parts dept, they couldn't tell me which belt, they said "probably 112 teeth, as it the newer engine, but can't guarantee it, you'll have to take it off and count the teeth"

Does anyone know for sure which belt or is it buy both and then take back the spare for refund - as the LR parts man said, but not from him as his price was

Thanks :)

112 teeth.

Without AC:
From engine number 20T2N17N000187 112 teeth. Up to engine number 20T2N17000186 114 teeth.

With AC:
Up to 20T2N18N0000243 114, 112 from 20T2N18N000244

Well, thats stupid from me, but just realized that 2.0L could have belts with diff teeth numbers. What could happen if you change it? like using the 112 on a 114 engine ?

Well..., I fitted the 112 belt on the place, but now I have a noise that cames after the engine is at normal temp ..., a kind of " vuuuu vuuuuu vuuuu" and increases the pitch with the revs. Could be caused by that? need to take the engine cover to check the engine number...

I've come to order my belt and I have the 112 / 114 decision. I don't have my engine number written down and I can't see it on the engine.

Does anyone know the VIN number cut off as I know my VIN is SALLNABB7XA652178?

I believe the 114 tooth belts were only on very early '97 cars. My VIN shows a '99 model year so I'm pretty confident its a 112 belt - but more obvious decisions have proved wrong :)

I used an image uploaded by JRNorway to try and find my engine number - but its midnight, that part of the engine is covered by various bits and I'm having no luck with the torch.

That's exactly what's going through my mind at the moment. The biggest problem I have is that there's so little room there to see if I've made any mistakes - or even just to get access.

Rave says to remove drive shafts, suspend engine on a hoist (which I don't have), remove the engine mounts and swing the engine to the left of the drive bay - before you even start. This thread makes it sound a lot quicker / easier for DIY....

Yours should be the 112 tooth version. Dont remember exactly how many but there was just a "few" early(97-98) ones that got the 114 tooth.

Im not around my LR computer until the weekend. But if you want i can confirm your VIN vs tooths then if you want.

Yeh, I'm going with the 112 tooth belt - thanks for the offer - time will tell if I should have waited (or got the old belt off first).
