Right, first of all I realise not everyone likes chequerplate so I know I'm risking being flamed by those of you who object to anything shiny on a land rover. It's OK, I'm a big boy now, I can take it.

The inside of the Beast was so dirty and smelly after years of abuse that I decided I was going to tidy it up in anticipation of the arrival of my Exmoor Trim Lock and Fold seats for the kids.

So, chequerplate in hand, I set to work at the weekend and wanted to share the before / during / after pictures with you and welcome your comments - good or bad!

As always, what started out as a simple plan to fit the loadspace liner kit ended up with many siezed bolts and bits that simply wouldn't fit but the trusty angle grinder solved all those problems :)

Anyway, let's start with a before:

Then, after the stinky carpet was ripped out (and the stubborn metal strip at the bottom of the rear door was grinded away:

And finally, after:

Even tidied up the rear door (although those of you with sharp eyes will see the previous owner's dodgy welding which I still haven't gotten round to recitfying...

So, I think it's a massive improvement. The wife is happy, which is a miracle in itself. What do you think?

The next steps are fitting new headlining with CB mounting above rear view mirror (lasalle trim) and a pair of lock and fold seats (exmoor trim). I'll try to post some new pics when I'm done.

Oi bolt......

Its er very er ......shiny

It'll also be very cold....how about some nice rubber matting to cover up the shinyness:D:D:D

having chequerplated the entire floor and rear tub of a previous 110 I would never do it again. It's noisey, cold in winter, slippery when wet, takes the skin off yer knuckles when loading/unloading and it creates condensation inside yer landy.

I do like the look of a chequerplated rear tub though.:D

Lasalle centre console ey, like to see pics when your done.

That chequer is wayyyy to shiny, can you make it dull? like anodised. rubber mat will be a good improvement and also adds to the safety for the kids :D

Cost me about £200 for a pre-cut kit from Rebel 4x4.
I did read previous comments about it being cold in winter and noisy so that's been taken under advisement.

Fortunately, I'm lucky enough to just have this as a weekend fun off-roader and it only does a few hundred miles a year so I can live with the cold and noise. I've also got a Disco3 (the family car) and a Merc C220 which I drive the rest of the time / when I don't want my ears to bleed :p

Griff - how would I make it less shiny? Could just give it a going over with the old wire brush I suppose...
Hadn't thought about how slippery it might be when wet but I've got some rubber matting which I'll stick in if the kids go in the back so thanks for the advice on that subject.

Dont forget to add the rubber rear lower door seal to replace the one you took off (if you still can)...the steel fitting plate you buy with it wont look out of place. Its 6 self tapping screws to fit. Should make it less prone to any water getting in or under the cheq plate. I was lucky my rubber mat was in good condition... so stuck with that.

I dunno how to make it less shiny. maybe age will do it :) The do an anodised finish CP but its too late for that now! Yes rubber load mat would be a good addition. stops the kids slipping with wet/muddy footware.

Good advice - I did think of that and while I had the angle grinder out I used the wire brush head to give the metal strip a once over. It's fitted over the top of the rear edge of the chequerplate, just like how it was holding the carpet down which means no sharp chequerplate edge and minimal water ingress from the door.

5 out of the 6 screws snapped off while I was trying to get them out and one only came out with a special screw removal tool so I had to take the angle grinder to the rest of them and try to drill the bottoms out - ended up riveting the strip back into place to keep a consistent look with the c-plate (obviously not anticipating it being taken out again any time soon).

Yeah, noise has already been mentioned. I'm in the process of fitting sound-dampening materials to my Defender. I have a chequer-plate sheet for the rear door (never fitted it) but now don't plan too as it would be a wonderful reflector of noise.

Good stuff Griff - well thought out, tidy and practical. The lashing eyes are a great idea so I'll have to sort some of those out to stop my boxes of ropes, shackles and strops from sliding all over the place
