ticking sound from the drivers side engine bay

i ve recently purchased a discovery 300tdi, been great for about 6 weeks. always been slow starting first thing, changed battery, starter, alternator, glow plugs and glow plug relay. but still the same.
any advise would be welcome.
however recently has developed a ticking/clicking sound from the drivers side of the engine, had a quick look but nothing stands out. not had diesel before so a but werey about problems that may happen.
would be great full of any pointers etc to try to sort these problems.

use a long screwdriver or broom handle or something to put on the engine and on your ear and act like a stethoscope... may get you closer to the cause of yer ticking
 
thanks, will try that. is there any way of testing lift pump(persume its the equivelent of fuel pump). with out taking it off?
what they like to change? do you need to bleed system afterwards.
 
To test it one thing you could do is to undo the fuel filter bleed screw and then operate the lever on the lift pump and see if it pumps fuel.

If it does it should be ok?
 
may sound silly, but as i ve said new to diesel engines is the fuel filter on the bulk head on the drivers side.

looked at the lift pump and the arm under the pump is really free and has no preasuer in it, its just flapping in the wind!
 
Yes Mark it is, about the size of a Coke tin and has on the underneath a thumbwheel which we will come back in a mo.

The bleed screw, from memory, is on top and at the front. Undo that a bit and then try the lift pump - if no diesel flows it's likely your lift pump is goosed - don't worry not expensive or difficult to replace.

Now back to the thumbwheel under the fuel filter - with diesel engines there is an everpresent risk of water in the fuel. Somehow within the filter this gets separated and you can draw off the water and any muck by first undoing the bleed screw on the top and then undo the thumbwheel on the bottom, catching the fluid in a small bowl. Let it flow until only clean diesel comes out then retighten the thumbwheel and using the liftpump (hah hah) prime the filter until no air bubbles show in the diesel coming out of the bleed screw, then tighten the bleed screw, give the pupmp 2-3 extra pumps then start yer engine.

Clear as mud??
 
great, sound easy enough..... ha ha
when changing the fuel filter is it like changing oil filter just screw off and screw back on. do you need to fill fuel filter first or just put it on.
then pump lift pump till the air is out and runs out of bleed screw
 
It looks like this, and sticks out of the side of yer injun, about half way down. It provides the vacuum for the servo assistance of yer brakes.
Use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope and have a good listen to it.

regarding the slow turnover in a morning mines exactly the same. however when i bought the car the oil hadn't been changed for a long while. did a change and turnover improved slightly. going to try connecting a better earth when i get a chance as the factory one seems to be connected to the head area of the engine which is alloy. so i'm gonna connect another to the block and direct to battery. i'll let you know if it works...
 
:) :) think i found the ticking type noise......
with the different ideas you guys passed on.
tried the different things suggested but did not seen to help.
but looking at the side of the engine grabed spanners and went round the engine side tightening things up.
got to the clamps that hold the injectors in and in tightening them up the sound disapeared, so fingers crossed will see if that was the cause of the sound.
thanks again for your suggestions.

:confused: i have a nother problem that may be the cause of my starting problem.
i tried to test the glow plugs with a multi meter but i found i was getting no readings on any plugs
where would i start looking to rectify this problem?
all suggestions welcome

the glow plugs have a very low resistance, so they're hard to meter.
whip them out and connect each one in turn across a battery. the tip should glow red hot within a couple of seconds is they're any good.
dont burn yourself!
 
had a simler noise ,track it down to no 4 injector not seating probley,took it out put new washer on it job done no noise.
