Ticking not turning

I know sweet f'all about landrovers but have had a B reg farm type dupped on me to sell. Yesterday it was turning over but not kicking in, battery fully charged and even had a van with leads attached. Got a thing of easy start today as it has been stood for a while and now it will not even turn over. I have beaten the b's out of the starter motor with the crank iron and right now all I want to do is torch it. Any help would be fantastic!

Petrol and matches will torch it quite easily, but don't spill any on yourself before lighting it.

It sounds like you need to remove the starter and either clean/refurbish it or replace it. Whereabouts are you, put your town/area in your CP, maybe someone can suggest a good mechanic/garage or to have a look at it for you?

There is a really good diesel garage just outside Wimbledon Village but to be honest as the vehicle is not mine and I am getting no money until it sells I am loathed to put any money into it, that and I am brassic. Was holding onto the hope it was just being tempremental and would start turning again and then start. I do not understand why it was turning yesterday and not today, it's not as if anything has been done to it in the interim.

Might be worth checking the connections to the starter from the battery and the earth connections from starter to engine/body .. poor earths can cause this sort of thing, it's a high-power item and the earth, if it's poor or crudded up, can fail at any time!

Undo each connector separately and clean it up, and it's connecting surface. I use a small wire brush and contact cleaner, then bolt them back together. Follow the lead to the other end and clean that connection up too. Follow the battery earth lead and clean that connection in the same way.

Connections checked and now I am smelling of swarfiga or however the heck you spell it! There is now zero power, nada, zip, diddly. I called and checked that the battery fitted is the correct size as I thought maybe it was not powerful enough but even if not powerful enough why would it go from being fully charged to zilch when nothing was on to be draining it??

sounds like the battery is flat, put it on charge again. the jump leads need to be quite heavy duty, is it a petrol or diesel engine?

Do you or any of your friends/family belong to the AA/RAC etc and have home start (or whatever it is called these days). A lot of the memberships will cover them for driving any vehicle, so could be worth a call to see if they can get it started for you!!

oh and if you are sure it has some charge in it and you are out of ideas, tow start it!!!

Ooooh tow start, I bagsy me in the Merc 311 and someone else in the Landy. Not got breakdown for any vehicle only my own Will put battery back on charge tomorrow, again, fooking thing. Any ideas as to why the battery would loose charge over night?

LOL, my wifes Nissan Micra did this just a couple of weeks ago .. I was ready to rip the immobiliser out, but put battery on charge, 'just in case'. Showed over 80% full but after 10 minutes it dropped to less than 20%!

Cell gone down, sometimes worked, mostly didn't ,, new battery fixed it ..

It's a brand new battery Paul! I recon there is a battery powered hamster who keeps plugging into the landy battery to re-charge and continue its torment of the street cats. There will be a bonfire in South West London soon! In all seriousness though what could be draining the power?

worst case, warped plate in the battery otherwise something left on thats draining the power, have you checked the cell levels?

Check cell level, OK will do when I get back to work tomorrow. Nothing left on to drain it, warped plate??? How do I know if it has one of those? Anyone up for a Landy sized BBQ ?

Sounds lik eyer jump leads are ****e.

I hope yer gonna take the filter box off before spraying easy start in it?

Is it petrol or diesel landy?

aaaaaaaaah the font of useless information strikes again !

Thanks Ratty, jump leads are fine as had already jumped a ldv convoy and a very posh gas range rover with them. As for spraying the easy start no damage could have been caused as the engine was not turning over, all that benefited from the spray was the road as there is now a nice clean patch where it dripped

Are ya sure theres fuel in it..daft answer i know but it does happen

Hey Archie, Yes there is fuel. Thought there was not but twisted some dial thing in the middle of the dash and there is 1/4 tank, although if truth be told I wish it were that simple
