coming from the back of the engine. it gets louder with more throttle and stops if you come off the gas while moving. can hear the noise at idle in P or N.

does not seem to be coming from an injector, more central at the back of the engine. quite annoying really :(

anyone offer any suggestions

the fact that it goes away when I come off the gas makes me think its the exhaust but its more central rather than one side of the other. My first thought was the autobox.

I had same sort of prob on my 4.6 it slowly got worse and as it did it developed a miss fire. Turnt out to be i had blown the side out of one of the head gaskets and the ticking noise was the gas from the cylinder escaping into the galley.

I'm following this thread as I have this ticking sound I think it's been like that for months as u cannot hear it with the radio playing.
I first thought it was sparks jumping from the leads, it sounds like a piece of cardboard clipped to a kids bike wheel.
It doesn't do it at tickover or when reving at 5000rpm or even when putting a load on the engine by being in drive with the brakes on and increasing the revs, it's just when accelerating or with the additional load ie. when going up a hill. Checked all the usual suspects plus fluids and exhaust and all are ok.
I changing my front pads which are now very thin, this week so will be looking there as I have checked every thing else

solved it I believe. looks like its the join (or around) between the manifold and the Y pipe on the right hand side as you look at the engine bay. will check the other side when the exhaust has cooled down.

leaking from the top as you look down. can't afford to replace it for MOT so will have to sorn her till I can afford to replace whats needed. will take off the heat wrap and see what sort of damage there is.

ticking noise under load sounds like pinking

does it do it on partial throttle?

Hi POAH, yes similar to pinking under load and ease off and it goes away but this is a different sound... it's a fast tic-a-tic-a-tick sound. Could be, it they make a sound, an injector opening/closing, the engine is lovery and quiet at tickover just the sound of the pullys and belt going around.

A fast ticking sound could be the injectors, I do on occasion notice it but I can't say I've ever been able to hear the injectors ticking from inside the Rangie and definately not when on the move.

I still have this same ticking noise on my 3.5 sd1 engine. It is on carbs so that rules out injectors on my engine anyway. I have been looking for this noise for ages now so am interested in the answer to this. I was begining to think it was my series gearbox that was wrong but i just don't know.
