Today i finally got round to strip the rear diff off the disco, it packed up a few weeks ago and i haven't had the chance before now, and this is what i found

now correct me if i am wrong but isn't this a 4 pin diff?

so i am quite happy about that but not so happy with the remains of the pinion bearing that i happily destroyed by continuing to drive the disco when i knew the rear diff was failing,

in my innocence or stupidity i thought it was a standard diff and it would just be easier to drive it until it died and then grab another standard diff and replace it, now im thinking of rebuilding it.

I followed treweys how to and have it stripped ready for replacement of the bearing when i source one, but do you think its worth having it rebuilt professionally by a transmission specialist or should i just chance it and see how long it runs for after i rebuild it?

and yes i can see the wear on the back of the input flange where the oil seal sits, gonna look for a 200tdi flange and shaft too, may as well whilst its in bits.

Tis just a 4 pin diff most lockers are 4 pin. No great advantage over a dif other than you can spin up opposite wheels for longer before it goes pop! I.e if you stuck and you spin up opposite wheels it shouldn't seize the gears to the centre pins and weld itself together and then explode. Remember tho that if you do indeed get stuck and spin up wheels the front if its not 4 pin will go pop before this one so not a great advantage unless you have front and rear done.

I am getting a collection of 4 pin centres now people are not paying anywhere near what they used to be ashcroft sell brand new ones for 240 plus vat which isnt bad but its only a 100 quid or so from a proppel locker.
