Hi guys I'm now putting the diff back together after changing all the bearings. The pinion height should be 38.01mm.
I have a reading of 38.42mm
That's 0.41mm to high.
Is this within tolerance. Anyone dealt with a diff before.

I don't know the exact diff you're working on, I've only done the ones in Series 3s and 9/110 etc. In these the correct pinion height is etched onto the pinion face, and shims are available in 0.002 steps to get you to that exact figure.

Have you got the green official manual?

Edit to add. I'm puzzled that it's that far wrong - did you do the adjustment of preload etc?

Hi thanks for your help. No I don't have a manual and the diff is off a 2A rover axle. I have used the original shimes under the main pinion bearing. If there is no acceptable tolerance to the pinion height . Then the bearing will have to come out and 0.41mm reduced by adding more shimes.
Cheers.

If you haven't got the manual I can't see how you set the preload - and so the height you've measured might not be right. Put up a picture of the diff housing nose and I'll reciprocate with some of the manual.
