This blows

i have disco 1 1998,when i accelerate when moving i get a cloud of black smoke.it feels very sluggish until the smoke blows out then it starts to pick up speed normaly.have changed filters twice in as many months, could this be injector related or fuel pump problem?. need help.thanks.disco 1 1998 300tdi.

Sounds like split/delaminated turbo hose, blocked egr valve or blocked intercooler to me.

thanks i will investigate.could an amateur like myself fix this?

What Ratty says. Start simple, check all the air inlet pipes, air filter housing, intercooler etc. Have someone rev the engine while you feel the 90 degree hose from the intercooler just before the turbo. It's supposed to be almost rigid, but should swell slightly with pressure/revs. if it doesn't, or it swells a lot then it's a possible problem area. The top hose from plenum to intercooler can de-laminate easily too, and this should also swell or harden with pressure/revs.

Which filter have you changed? There's potential for the air and fuel filter to give problems like this.
