Hi,

I am new to this forum, the land rover bug has bitten me badly and i have started to look around, i have on in mind disco series ii td5 99 model, it is a bit high mileage but it is superbly looked after. There is however a terrible whining noise that is coming from the fron towards the drivers side ( i am from south africa so the drivers side is on the right hand side ) the dealer says that some more experienced disco drivers that had been looking at it, left him under the impression that it should be cheap and easy to fix. However i would like some advice on what it could possibly be before i decide to buy it.

Another questions, any experience with the average highest mileage that the td5 can reach, the vehicle currently has 168000 miles on the clock.

The motor starts like a dream, mechanically everything sounds fine except for the pulley wine.

Any advice on what else to look for?

Thanks in advance for your reply's

There are loads of things that could lead to pulley whine and on TD5, very few of them are cheap.

Unless this vehicle is VERY cheap inyour marketplace, I would walk away from it. It has lots of miles and some problems, so it needs to be very cheap.

I reckon you would be far better off with a last-of-the-line TDi 300. They had all their bugs ironed out, reliable machine, easy to work on and cheap parts.

Early TD5's, in my opinion, have too many problems by comparison to a '98 TDi 300.

The Disco II models are very much improved over the Series I, but however attractive it may be, mileage is wear, and a worn diesel engine is going to be expensive at some point.

Unless you are getting the vehicle at a discount, I would be inclined to walk away from the deal. Just because someone says it will be cheap, that's not going to help you when it all falls apart.

if it is so cheap to fix, ask the seller to fix it before you buy ;)

Hi,

the dealer says that some more experienced disco drivers that had been looking at it, left him under the impression that it should be cheap and easy to fix.

If it was that cheap & easy to fix, ask yourself WHY did they not buy it themselves ... personally it ring's alarm bell's for me and I'd walk away... just my opinion though... and it is over average mileage too!
