sorry for the million questions at the moment folks but im looking for your opinions.

The DSE has had the new engine fitted by myself and i have put the battery on charge (not sure what state its in as i bought it from a salvage company) but the starter isn't catching its just spinning (fairly slow) and electrics are dim and not working properly. Under cranking (well starter motor spinning) im only getting 7.5 volts. Is the battery buggered?

if i need a new battery ill be getting one from the motorfactors what are its minimum requirements, looking to spend the least i can as its costing me a fortune and i haven't decided wether i will sell it on yet.

is something like this the minimum requirements and cheapest im going to find?

My rule of thumb for batteries is get the biggest you can afford, which will fit into the battery bay properly. I'd recommend sealed, maintenance-free, as I've never had problems with them versus the others which eventually salt up.

I'd recommend nothing less than 500A cold cranking, and minimum 100Ah.

For the record I've got a 550A, 160Ah sealed calcium unit which only just fits in the bay with some very slight persuasion.

To small a battery can play havoc with your electrics as the volts can drop too low on cranking, never mind giving you a poor start.

i recently needed a new battery and after going to halfords, partco and another local motor factor, i actually found the cheapest decent (100 Ah i think) battery to be landrover dealers original equipment. i couldn't believe it. it was about £95 i think.
If you're not buying OE equipment, make sure the +ve and -ve posts on the battery are in the right place. i bought a partco battery but took it back because the posts were in the corner of the battery instead of in the middle at each end. sounds like nothing but the connectingf leads on my DHSe were a really tight fit with no extra cable available. otherwise i would have had to adjust all the cables.

might head down to the breakers and see if they have any decent used ones, rather have one of those that a cheap too small new one tbh.

does it sound like too little volts when cranking then? too low to even let the starter catch as it just spins at the moment?

make sure all the earth are good, engine to chassis and chassis to battery

i recently had some issues with slow cranking, alternator was only charging at 13.5 volt so i replaced that with a 120 amp unit for £95 :) then changed the battery due to one dead cell, i got a 75amp hour for my 4.6 hse for £49 :) with a 3 year gaurantee!
if you gona get one from a breakers your gona be spending a lot of time on here with a million electrical faults and false warnings, in short i think you must be mad concidering the nature of the beast.

Just a thought, but check the engine is well earthed to the chassis, could be slow cranking due to a crappy earth.

I've generally found that after re-builds you will need to have a good battery and a pair of good quallity jump leads connected to a running car as it will take a while to lift the fuel to the injectors ect.

P.S. check the engine earth by connecting the neg jump lead from the engine to the neg terminal, see if it's any better.

ive got the earth strap located to the left of the engine near the air compressor pump, what should it be screwed to? ive screwed it to the engine block is that right?

I agree with Rodent, I was quoted 175-300 for a new battery for my TD6, in the end I got one from Land Rover at 85+vat. Its been fine ever since.
