Had to be recovered today and had to be put onto the back of a recovery truck, and taken home.

Out for a run this afternoon. Heard a slight 'bang'/knock from in front of the gearstick area (clutch/bellhousing), which then sounded like something spinning round fast.
Moments later, LOTS of noise, so pulled over fast, think we lost power/momentum, but it all happened so quickly..
Tried to turn over engine, but everything locked up.
Put into gear, and rocked landy backwards a little.
Tried to turn over. It would, but sounded like all my spanners were being thrown around in the bellhousing area.
Suspect the clutch is at fault, so going to split over the nest week.
If I am splitting, will replace the clutch etc anyway.
Sorry for the waffle!
Question is..
Has anybody purchased a clutch kit for a 300tdi lately? Been told from previous owner that our Defender has a Disco 300tdi and running gear init, but age of engine unknown.
Until midnight, there is a discount code at eurocarparts.

Thanks, and any feedback or comments needed!!! ha ha

Just what kits/brands people can recommend really. Been told by a family member that LUK clutches are good, and I can get one from Eurocarparts for £120 (after discount code)

Must be over 20 odd years since I changed a clutch, and that was a Mk1 Astra!!!

LUK are a good make.....but at that price (even with code) I'd want the fecking thing gold plated.!!

Looking at your link - the picture shows it is a Valeo friction plate!

As a for instance, you can get a Valeo Clutch friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing for £60 (ex VAT), Valeo Heavy Duty kit for £90 (ex VAT) or a Delphi kit for £68 (ex VAT)....

Changing it out is simple enough....depending on how yours was modded, getting to the top bell housing bolts can be a faff....

Have any recommendations of where to get from? I have been looking online at the regular places, but until I decide on what brand to go for, difficult to compare prices.

I usually use Island 4x4 or Paddock Spares for online orders....The prices above are from Island 4x4 (I have no affiliation to either of them).

For the 'need urgently' items I use a local specialist in Alton.

From memory Valeo were the OEM suppliers, and I fitted one about 18 months ago on the girlfriends 300Tdi 110....no issues.

If you're feeling flush try this.

If your gonna go as far as fitting the HD larger friction plate etc, then I'd fit the all metal HD release bearing too.....that kit looks like it has the standard plastic bodied bearing.
Thanks for the advice. Had a quick look, and can only find britpart ones? SO far, the advice given to me is to stay away from this brand.
Andy

Hmmmm....maybe BP are the only ones who do the HD bearing then...

In that case a genuine NSK bearing with the plastic case would be more superior!
It isn't going to be driven hard, and doubt it will see much off roading (perhaps after we have had it for a while so we know what chassis, gearbox, etc are like, we might), so probably a 'standard' bearing from a good manufacturer would do anyways. Only want to do the job once (on my own doing it), hence the thought of whatever goes in being Heavy Duty rated.

This is the one I fitted when I removed the engine on my 300Tdi a few weeks ago (to replace the rearmost core plug).....it is a genuine NSK bearing....

Just in the process of changing mine this weekend, has a similar sound to yours but managed to get home. Clutch plate rivets are staring to pull and the springs were v loose and rattling (plus one spring had broken). I got a complete clutch kit (valeo clutch, HD release arm, spigot bush and NSK standard bearing). No need to go HD clutch for normal use as it will make your gearbox sound a bit noisier in neutral than a standard one (HD has more/stronger springs so you lose some of the damping effect which can make the gears chatter). I've just got to put the transfer box back in today and then sort the seatbox out.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the use of a HD clutch. Would you mind letting me know where you got the bits from and price? (feel free to pm me if you dont want it going onto an open forum).
Bloomin pulled my back the other day, which isnt going to make the job any easier. Just going to take it steady with it, and look at removing floor and centre gearbox cover. It isnt our main drive, and it is a 'hobby' vehicle, so not going to let it get in the way of daily life!!!

Thanks

Got the full kit of everything from Keith Gott (as they are local and good to chat with), think it was £120 or thereabout.

That's who I use for my 'need urgently - can't wait for delivery' parts....really helpful guys (and the young lady on the parts telephone line too).....never failed to find the part I need on a dusty shelf somewhere, no matter how obscure!

Well....
Gearbox dropped out

Found that the bellhousing to gearbox bolts had either dropped out, or were finger tight. A few had made contact with the clutch, and made a bit of a mess.

Whilst checking things over, found the clutch release arm cracked, so will certainly be ordering a HD one.

This is the clutch plate that was on.

I need to order a clutch kit obviously, but would love to have some advice on what else to replace whilst everything is out (ie on the gearbox and transfer box). I really do appreciate any input.

Thanks

Andy

HD clutch fork is an obvious thing to refit.

Love those bolts, must be the same guy who rebuilt the rear diff on mine......:D

Cheers
