Have a 2000 DHSE auto.
Having looked through rave this evening with the thermostat next to me, i
saw that there should be a bypass valve of some sort. Neither of the thermostats i have, have got this.. How much of an issue would that be or is there now a built in bypass that isnt so obvious.

I suggest you buy a LR part. I had problems with pattern part versions of thermostat and I ran around in circles for a short time before confirming it must be the second new thermostat faulty. Spent my money and bought a LR version (actually stamped BMW) and all became fine.

Think im going to have too, as my old thermostat doesnt have the bleed hole and im pretty sure the new one didnt either...

hoping that this fixes the issue an the head aint gone

If it doesn't look like the one in the picture with the bypass valve it's the wrong stat. If the bypass is not closed when main valve opens you won't get proper circulation.

Looks exactly the same, but it does not have the little piece that has to be lined up in the casing.

Suggest a temp check in a pan of water?

I checked my second pattern part one this way and could prove it would not open fully!
the LR one. I also checked hot and it showed to work fine.

All my troubles went away.
I kept my old one with the guts removed in the boot just in case I ever need to get out of trouble..
