Hi All,
Well i finally did it after months of looking i bought a very tidy 2000 DHSE its high mileage 190k but has had loads spent on it with receipts ie skimmed head pressure tested new head bolts water pump new fip starter motor oil pump water pump thermostat coolant flush re built air compressor new air bags (dunlop). I am now having problems getting decent insurance quotes the lowest being £333 i am 61 been driving since 1984 with over 20 years ncb miles 3000 per year surely there should be lower quotes than this AF quoted £560!

That's very encouraging:( i'm a believer in that if it's maintained well it should be pretty reliable and as this new purchase has been looked after it has a fighting chance i will be maintaining the best i can with no skimping ;)

BMW state the head cannot be skimmed on the M51.

It's still under warranty as was only done last October.

Maybe it should not because of piston clearance? And if you do skim it because it has overheated and warped you fit a very thick head gasket to compensate?

No idea myself I have never had a Diesel.

I would expect a warranty on the head to be worthless. If the head fails you would have to prove it was not due to an overheat to get any joy with whoever did the job and any professional should be aware that the M51 head is not suitable for skimming.
You may be lucky with it or you may not, bit like Russian roulette.

It's weakness of the head that is the problem not as far as I know piston clearance. Not sure a thick head gasket would survive the diesel combustion pressures.

As a Classic V8 man myself I have no knowledge of P38's & even less when it comes to diesels, but I wish you well with your purchase.

Car insurance is a minefield. I have been insuring vehicles for 58 years & have long since given up trying to make sense of the variation in quotes.
All you can do is shop around, don't be bullied into accepting a quote by some pushy agent trying to sell you a level of cover that you don't really need & be aware that some classic car insurance 'specialists' do not always offer the best deal on an older car.
 
Mine is Hastings £270 fully comp , 6000 miles a year and agreed £3500 valuation cover. All the usual stuff free courtesy car, uninsured driver cover etc
