Love landrovers... really do... got myself a lovely disco 300tdi... aint no porsche...its work, life, kid transporter.... had it all of 6 months...

heater hose went...she went hot on me.... reckon I have done a head gasket...

so apart from stroking my head to make me feel better, who can tell me how much its going to cost me?.. or rather how much a garage is going to charge me..?

by reading this, I want you to watch this space and lets see how much its gonna cost me to repair.. I will update you all.:(

but it does make you laugh... It could be worse...

would love to buy spanners, torque wrench, have a dry garage, decent light and time to do it.
I will put my hand up and own up..., need more experience around tdi300... to dive in and attempt a head gasket... cylinder heads and skimming and then pressure tests.. as we all do, I want to keep the cost of repairs down...

heater hose went at the rear... nice split... temp went up bad... and now the heater doesnt work. checked thermostat reflushed and filled the system with coolant...

but no luck on it as had it pressure tested and it changed the pressure test fluid with the gasses.

sounds like I am just another of the thousand of blokes in this forum that has a land rover problem lol!:D

As the 300 tdi is an OHV engine, with push rods, there are no camshaft/timing belt issues doing the head-I would have a go ,at least get the head off,and take to a machine shop,to check flatness/and or skimming (if you are not confident with a steel rule,or a sheet of glass)-order a new gasket set, people on here will help you

Thats GOOD luck in the world of disco....read some of the rest our threads!

Headgasket isnt a hard job to do, some strange things can happen. But on the whole Id say do it yourself, under £100 inc torque wrench.

Pressure test and skim will be about 80 quid or so to start with, then add a few hours garage labour, probably 200 quid or more. Bleed the system with the little cap on top of thermostat housing with expansion cap on. once that housing is full with engine running its full. put that on and take expansion tank cap off. The tank should be half full, start engine and watch it, does it stay half full or does the level rise and rise and spill over the top?

oh btw its not all that bad, i had a core plug go on the rear of the engine, below the head. Had to take engine out to fix it - takes about a minute to swap core plug :(

Yeah, why is it ALWAYS that core plug that goes?Ive had that a few times and it was a favourite on pinto engines in transits, back in the stone age.

shocker... you have made my day... there is nothing worse than letting your wheels sit there and waste your insurance money is there?.. its usually the price of the labour that hurts the most... I think its time to man the £$ck up

and go and buy some tools..

So in that case, what is a skim worth??

the Taliban were more stressful.

If youve done it before and have the right tools (extensions for sockets etc for awkward to get at bolts) then it will probably take an hour or so to get off, then you send it to the shop to be tested/skimmed, pick up next day and maybe 2 or 3 hours to put back together, oh the gasket is probably 20 quid at guess (cant remember). They say use new head bolts, i never have but dont cry if one snaps!! You need a torque wrench and feeler guages (tappets - clearance set to 0.2mm). A haynes manual should get you through it, or download RAVE cd (you need to know tightening order and torque of bolts, and there are 2 or 3 stages). Try posting your location, somone might help you for a few beer tokens!

oh dear.
i keep helpin with diy workshop, advise, tools, even gettin in there and doing.

(sorry willraff in otley, i will ring you!)

i have a thread on head changing and prices (£40 for skim and pressure test for bananaheads benefit!)

why dont people help themselves by sayin where they are?

oh, and search on here.

Link us lazy sods up to your head thread then.....oh,and when you give us your location, can you include a county as I dont know EVERY town in the UK.:biggrin1::hug:

40 quid for test and skim sounds cheap....I like cheap! Im getting quoted near to double that once the vat is in.Not had the need for a skim since Ive been back in cornwall so Ive no contacts anymore.A couple of the guys on here have helped me out but the price does seem high at the places Ive spoken to so far, given that In presenting them with a cleaned stripped head (and I suppose I may as well do the core plugs while Im at it) for them to play with.
