When we bought our discovery 1 it came with two single button fobs.
One worked, one did not.

Ordered a new one from remote key and today it arrived. Lovely.

Went through the programing procedure and the new one went into the system just fine.

Tried to program in the old fob and the little LED on the fob itself just flashes and it wont go into the system. Previously when pressing the button the LED would light up solidly and stay on for as long as you held the button. Currently it will flash rapidly 8 times then light up solidly for about 2 secconds before extinguishing itself.

So now I'm back in the same position I was before with only one working fob.

Any ideas / hints / tips, please?

You are at stage 10 with your original fob in it's programming mode indicated by the flashing led so waiting to be programed.

1. Ensure ignition is OFF, doors unlocked, bonnet switch closed.
2. Ensure procedure from 3 to 9 is completed within 8 seconds.
3. Switch Ignition ON
4. Switch Ignition OFF
5. Lock Doors and Unlock Doors
6. Release Bonnet Switch
7. Switch Ignition ON
8. Switch Ignition OFF
9. If alarm is set, horn will sound and LED with light. Now programming of plips can be completed.
10. Press and hold down button on plip until LED flashes.
11. Repeat for additional plips.
12. The dash LED will extinguish if both plips have been programmed successfully

I have EXACTLY the same problem.

Only the original fob will programme but the other 2 I acquired won't due to the same reason you mentioned - the 2nd fob led only flashes and won't hold a steady led, therefore not making it possible to be programmed in, despite using brand new batteries.

Hoping we get the answer now you've started this thread.

It's the flashing led on the fob itself that's causing the problem, not the dashboard led.
Some fobs hold a steady led, others don't. Only those which hold a steady led are compatible with the above procedure.
Trust me, I've gone through it a dozen times or more, it just won't have it.

Just to clarify, there are three red LED's that flash - one on the dashboard under the radio and one on each of the two plips.

Prior to doing anything with the alarm system, when pressing the button on the original plip it's own LED would illuminate continuously. Since changing the batteries and attempting to re-program it to the alarm the plips LED now flashes 8 times and comes on solid for 2 seconds before extinguishing every time the button is pressed.

If I attempt the programme sequence, the alarm ECU will accept the new fob quite happily. The new plip functions in the same manor the original one used to - i.e the plips LED illuminates solidly when the button is pressed and after a moment the dash LED will flash to indicate the ECU has accepted the new fob.
However, the original fob is just never accepted.

It makes no difference what order I attempt to program in the fobs - if I try the old plip first and then the new the new will lock in but not the old. If we try the new fob first and then the old, once again, the new fob will lock in but the old one wont.

It's like the original fob is in some sort of "limp mode"? Perhaps it was a faux pas to change the batteries before attempting to reprogram the plips?
