Now, I've got a Disco 1 300, it's got a 2" lift, 265/75 knobblies, big defender roof rack, spot lights, roof rack etc. and looks suitably off road to not be dismissed as just the school run wagon, and it's used off road as well when I take it shooting, and trundling around farms. It's not a pay & play toy though, and hopefully doesn't look like I've just spent all pocket money on and still live with mum and dad etc.
But this is also my family car which the wife drives around in as well, and it usually has the 2 kids in.
It was also bought to save me money, and running on veg oil (proper twin tank setup) it's the most economical car I've ever owned (or ever will, probably).

I get it that we're 'in the club' - I have exactly the same thing with my (real) mini: you see another and you wave/flash and it's usually reciprocated.

What annoys me is to be associated with the 18 year old chavs who've just bought a disco because it's cheap, then thrown the usual set of off road mods at it:
Fark off big Insa turbo Special tracks, snorkle, mahoooosive set of spot lights on a roof bar, suspension lifted so high the local McDonalds have to keep repairing the height barrier at the entrance to the drive by, bumpers cut down or off, 'sports' exhaust (on a tractor ffs  ) and the injection pump turned up sooo much that as soon as the spotty inbred yoof looks at the accelerator, the nearby vicinity turns into a re-enactment of the great smog of 1952, while you can only hear them tearing off at "fookin-well-fast-mate" speed into the distance.

I suppose the answer is to just keep my disco looking half sensible, but you just know that people in their euroboxes are looking at you and thinking you're about to drive across the nearest golf/park/garden because you're obviously an off road chav: You drive a modded Disco.

Is it me, or am I just being a snob?

Ermmmmm!!! we were all young, I remember my mini cooper S and me wanting to race the Stags, its just a vicious circle... One Life Live It,,,

Yeah but I still count myself as reasonably young - I'm 35.

Balls, that was ancient to my mind even when I was 20!
Then again, I never did like the chavy boy racer look on cars - most on the VDub scene just look like ****s to me!! :D

Lol 35 your half way to 70, I was exactly the same, I'm 54 and when I'm trudging along in my 300 disco and see these young ens, I giggle to myself. boy racer or not, there's something special about behind the wheel of something you enjoy at any age, 400bhp or 120bhp.

Or... you see some modern thing broken down.. some recovery service or other there and all sorts of trickery plugged in to try and "fix" it - or the electric handbrake stuck on etc., etc.

We were in halfords car park a bit ago, and they had a puegeot people carrier thing with the front OS corner in bits, and about five "mechanics" stood round scratching their heads. I looked a the wife, and we both burst out laughing.

Disco1's for ever, at least If I get my way!:D

Just reminded me of a time an owner of a ford Kuga on a camp site in the lakes came over one morning and said to me excuse me mate you guys know your way round cars you must do when there as old as this and keep them going, do you by any chance know how to change the brake light bulb on my Kuga, I didn't know wether to punch the pri** or just PMSL, I just said sorry mate a bit to advanced for me, I think he called the breakdown service.
I'm not joking when I say, every morning when I jump in my disco1 I have a big smile on my face especially in winter as she pulls up the hill where I live, and even more so when the 30 grand German motors can't get up it

Round here its all t4 or t5 vans. Very few tdi discos let alone modded ones. Move to Swansea : )
Put it this way, I drive a rav4 these days after my wife banned any more land rovers. It has sun shades in it with cat faces on them. Bet I look more of a prick than any disco owner : /

I thought the problem with discoveries was the boot floor rust o_O

But seriously, I've just bought another D1 that has modular wheels fitted, I'm getting a set of original steel wheels sandblasted to get back to the standard look (getting rare now but still cheap  )
It's purpose is to tow a horse box & if I ever get my scheise together tow my Chevette HS rallycar but that's a long way off :D
Rich.

Yep, that's the one!!! last big snow round here, I was driving up Winnats pass, in second difflock in, and there were all sorts of "£mucho vehicles" slipping and sliding around me - I just gently steered round them, and made my way home.
