Hi all, previous to my thread 'clonking in reverse` i have just come back & reversed onto my drive put the car in p & the damn thing has just rolled forward making the same clonking noise as when i reverse. Appart from suprising me & i am even more baffled, has anyone any ideas as this is obviously an auto gearbox prob. snoops:(

the clonking as you say do you only here it when driving very slow ??

if so have you checked wheel bearings ??
uj's

only seems to be when you drive slow, but as i say i get the same noise when i select p & it rolls where it has not locked the transmission

I had this sort of puzzling problem on a range rover classic.
I had the car into an automatic gearbox specialist but the gearbox was fine, still i had a clonk and when left in park on a hill it would roll. I learnt to live with it for a few months then i sent it into a independant land rover workshop to have the half shaft seals done on the rear. When they pulled the half shaft out there was almost no splines left on it where it went into the diff. Replaced half shaft and it stopped rolling.
Maybe this could be a similar problem.
Hope you get it sorted soon
Mark

Cheers squizzel, it's going into my local independent on Tuesday to have the timing belt done, i will ask them to have a look as it is bugging me. as i say i cannot understand why the clunking in reverse on left hand lock, but then again it is a disco lol.

CV joints fail before the half shafts in many cases. I would look at these joints first. It will be more pronounced on full lock. This is a relatively easy job, so I would remove these and check them before you ask the garage to check. Could save you an expensive bill from the garage, by the time they diagnose and fix the problem. The kit from Paddocks is about £35 per wheel.

Thanks for the info Terryds/Busterbus, how long roughly does it take to replace the cv joint & would the cv joint/drive shafts on a 300 tdi be the same as as the ones on a 200 tdi? The reason being i recently stripped my old 200 tdi, again thanks for the info & any advice would be appreciated. Snoops

I think the shafts are different on a 300, 200 has 10 spline, I think 300 is 24 spline.

Btw, pop it into diff lock and see if it still rolls down the hill.

You're definitely loosing drive somewhere, I reckon it's rolling a bit through some broken driveline somewhere.

To do the CV joint would be about about 1 hour per wheel. I am not sure when they changed to 24 splines but it looks like after JA032850. Paddocks are usually helpful on advice.

cheers terryds, will have to wait till next weekend now (due to the fact no lr parts suppliers seem to open on sundays up here) thanks for the info. snoops

Paddocks will deliver in 48 hrs and if you order for both wheels, delivery is free if over £50. You still need to check if that is the problem before ordering the parts. Local dealer will want at least 3 times the price for parts. You will also need a 52mm box spanner or socket to do the joints.:)

I would like to hear evidence of this ****part that everyone goes on about!!

I have fitted a shedload of britpart stuff to my disco, new swivel kits, drive flange kits, rear main seal, and a squillion other seals and bearings, plus a good deal of switches and gaskets and nuts and bolts etc etc, and it's all fitted right, looked proper and caused me no hassle.

What's the big deal?! I know it's cheaper stuff, but I haven't seen any poor quality stuff yet! Especially if you take the price into account, and the fact that they do the job, I've been very pleased with the britpart stuff and have no hesitation in buying more! Britpart has rebuilt my disco nearly, couldn't have done it without them.

I am really interested to hear good examples of ****partness!

Cheers, sam.
