I'm not talking the old Oasis B-side, I'm on about my masterplan for the Disco:

1. Sort CV joint asap.
2. K&N airfilter
3. De-EGR
4. De-cat
5. Some sort of ECU upgrade/chip/tuning

My aim is better MPG and a moderate performance boost would be nice too.

I then intend to move on to improving the handling side of things. I don't intend to do any extreme off-roading, but I regularly ford a river and drive across fields etc. Will be fitting AT tires early on, and am considering a snorkel (although it will pain me to cut the wing). Any comments and advice will be greatly appreciated - I intend to keep this car for years to come.

I've only heard bad or worthless results on the K&N  rest sounds ok.

If your'e not deep fording (above the air intake) why fit a snorkel, it offers more air resistance to the engine.

5. Some sort of ECU upgrade/chip/tuning - (this really is worthwhile for performance gains, maybe also a slight improvement in mpg)

See replies in red. If you are worried about mpg, maybe you bought the wrong car?

I was'nt ragging on the K&N, just that they dont seem to filter as well as a cheap paper unit and once washed, they are even worse. There can be a small improvement in performance but the pssible damage caused by sucking dirt put me and a few mates right off them. When you come to clean out the manifold or carb on older engines, you can see the crap buildup.

I would rather bung on a new paper filter for £3 every 6 months than fit one of those for £20 or £30.

Just my 2p worth.

All the gucci stuff is having to wait for the basics to be sorted first. Dropped the headlining yesterday and sorted the leaky sunroof at the front. Typos black original sealant had gone all hard and lost it's adhesion to the metal. Sorted with a bit of pipe sealant. Next is the front nearside wheel hub replacement.
Got a cheap A-bar off eBay too, that'll be on the list of to do's, as well as some driving lights to fit it. Can never have too much high beam!!!!

Ta Battenburg. Diagnosis in, and it's the hub bearings that are going on the FNS. A new part will be ordered shortly. MOT due soon, so fingers crossed it'll pass cos not gonna have time to fit new hub before. Not much play in wheel so should be ok!
Gonna get intercooler out and give it a clean too, and clean out or replace the pipes that are full of EGR ****.

Parts ordered from Rimmers Bros - went for an aftermarket hub assembly, so will report back any quality issues. I don't anticipate anything.

Also ordered all the parts for every service in the book. Figured I'd make sure the basics were done right before I started on the mods.

Thanks to the LR workshop manual, decoded the VIN yesterday and found out no cat fitted at factory. Not to do with year, just they made them either with or without for some reason, and mine is a without one. One less thing to pay for. Hub will be done this weekend hopefully, then that's 3 out of 5 done. Remap will wait until next year evenly finances have recovered!

If I remember correctly they didn't start fitting cats on TD5's until 2001 production, for some reason - maybe it was felt the the early TD5's were clean enough for the then current regs. That would be an EU2 car - EU3 cars started production about August 2001 and did have cats as std.

Cheers
Dave

Oh dear. Parts came and hub is Britpart. Will be returning that then, that **** has no place on my Disco!!!!

Gonna do what I should have done and get a genuine part. The ****part bit didn't even have Timken bearings!!!!

MOT passed, now on to servicing and fettling. Today - fuel filter and maybe oil filters and renewal!

Sailed through MOT with no problems, I felt like a proud father on sports day.

Had nose while it was up in the air. Gonna have to get busy with a wire brush and some waxoyl underneath!
