The Lightweight...what's the verdict?

Looking for a nice Land Rover and had originally had the 2a or the 3 on my list.

Was always aware of the lightweight but hadn't really considered it as a viable option...are they worth considering?

Essentially looking for a country lane bomber to be used on the odd occasion (and something I won't lose money on).

Are the lightweights pretty commercial or will they never be as collectable as the 2a and 3?

What should I be aware of when going to look at one?

Best wishes and thank you in advance.

BW,

Conor.

I should think that if you can find a lightweight that’s original, solid and tidy, you will never lose money on it. I can’t remember seeing one on the road for a long time. Series 1 apart, I would stick my neck out and suggest lightweights are probably more collectible than a ‘normal’ series 2 or 3, but any series, if kept well will probably also appreciate in value. Soft tops are great for bombing around the lanes in summer with the roof off and I would kill for one! A rag top landrover faith the canvas off is unbeatable! Buy well and get on with it!

I had a white lightweight with a blue canvas a few years ago loved it, I had a silly offer on it so I sold it.
Very desirable motors ;)

That one looks lovely and at a reasonable price, as u can tell by the other adverts.

I would recommend keeping it original in the long run as not so many unmolested ones around and they should appreciate in value.

They are pretty commercial/basic vehicles, rarer than civvy series 2&3. Also heavier ironically. Will need a lot of general maintenance like any series Landy and panels/cab won’t be water or draft tight.

I don’t think you’ll find many that nice for £6.5k assuming everything is good on inspection.

I think same as a series. I’m not a lightweight expert, just a window shopper but the bulkheads I believe are prone to rust, bear in mind the top bit (with vents) is a separate panel that lifts off. Parts that are lightweight specific are more expensive and rarer than normal series. Ask if it’s 12v or 24v, 24v stuff is harder to get than 12v.

That is a valid point about the parts. Not so many lightweights about as civvy vehicles.

I have never had one myself, but I would have thought they are fairly sought after, due to the rarity.

I always liked the look of them, and the cutaway bonnet must make for better forward visibility off road.
