The Dreaded Transmission Failsafe

Have you had it on diagnostics to find out what fault codes are logged regards why it went into failsafe mode?

The TB shift motor is expensive and throwing one at it and it turns out not to be that is false economy.....

The GM5 box on the Td6 is a major weak point, and are known to lunch themselves with grave regularity, the chief cause is the valve block that wears out due to soft materials.

The first thing is to get it on diagnostics as it may point you in a direction of what to check next....guess work is fool-hardy.

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply, I am just looking for my options for diagnostics checks done near to my place as I am in East London and trying to find a reliable garage for the same. Will get this done and update the post accordingly but if anything worse happen, then will come back soon here.
fingers crossed!!!

Hi IT_GUY,

I have the same issue that I override by driving up the gears with manual upshift and letting it come down automatically. This is buying me time to get the Mechatronic unit in my 4.2 tested.

This diagnosis was based on the smooth manual upshift overcoming the "over rev from 2-3 & 3-4 in auto mode" that was causing the "Transmission Fault" and limp in third gear.

Good luck and keep us all posted.

Tricky.

Hi all

just got the diagnostics check done today. the mechanic advised to go for rebuild the gear box as it gave error on gear5. he advised to use it in manual if it get stuck but said that it's not gone completely but need to recondition it. he cleared all the faults but advised me that it's slipping gears and probably there is some mechanical issue with GB. no error for transfer motor except few error on electricals related to lights, central locking and sunroof, which i was not aware of.
is there is any suggestions for future?

Hi All

people i really need help now. just got a call from the mechanic and he quoted me £2800 + vat for G/B transmission, torque convertor reconditioning. Now I am thinking to sale my car and get a something cheaper coz it's a lot of money to invest on 54 plate RR and I think it's not feasible too.

It has been said before by myself and others, just because the L322 can now be bought for prosecco money, it is still a champagne car. They are not cheap to run, cost of repairs are usually high(medium if you're lucky) and should be taken into account before buying.
Personally, I don't think it's a false investment getting the gearbox fixed. I only had mine done last year and I couldn't have bought another car in the class of a Range Rover ,or anywhere near it, for the price of fixing it. A cheaper car may mean cheaper bills but you bought a Range Rover because it was what you wanted, a couple of grand won't buy you much on the car market but a couple of grand on a gearbox will give you your Range Rover back.

Hi
well said and it's a truth. Indeed m going to get the G/B repaired, thanks a lot.
:)

Make sure the valve block gets refurbed (fit a Sonnax one if you can), not just the gearbox and torque converter. Or you'll be doing it again in 6 months.

Glad I could help :) @davidsmith1307 is right, make sure the valve block is included in the work. Also I would suggest a word of mouth recommendation for a company to do the work. I'm sure someone on here near to you will be able to give you a name. Take a look around the regional forum and see who is near you.

A blocked oil cooler would be more likely to signal the TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT message rather than TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG and the transmission would shift at much higher revs (i.e. ECU selects cooling strategy mode).

When you say ‘the car went in to TRANSMISSION FAILSAFE’ do you mean that it locked in 4th gear or just that the message appeared?

The first thing I would do is get the codes read at a stealer using Testbook/T4 (and not at an Independent using Autologic) to check that it’s not a faulty transfer box shift motor potentiometer signal. I’ve stripped three L322 5HP24s in the past few months which turned out to be in perfect condition because the fault lay with the shift motor potentiometer and had nothing to do with the transmission.

Oh, and you can’t overfill the 5HP24 because the filler plug is also the level plug.
Hi Bemble,
I have the transmission failsafe mode with a total lack of power in my 2006 vogue l322 td6. I have been on to my local mechanic whoi thinks the issue is within the transmission box itself which he won't touch. I have had to advise from another guy who does work on the auto boxes to say changing the oil and filter is a simple enough job that may remedy the problem?
Im just wondering would you advise this. Or if you have nay idea what the problem sounds like?
Thanks in advance ,
ADrian

Certainly no harm in trying a fluid/filter change as Dexron is fairly cheap, but I admire his optimism that this might fix your transmission. The GM 5L40-E transmission in your TD6 is infamous for its unreliability and I’m afraid that the cause of the failsafe is more likely to be down to a hydraulic/mechanical failure. There might be a clue when he drains the old fluid out if there’s metallic debris in it. Good luck!

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the reply. I'll get the filter and oil changed and see how that goes then get it to someone who can work onthe aurto transmission on Northern Ireland as they seem to be harder to find than hens teeth!
Cheers,
Adrian
