I have fitted a defender transfer box and then had Mike from Dynachip work his magic with the ecu and all I can say is WOW! Pulls like a train and the important thing for me, it also tows great, I’ve pulled my ifor trailer today weighing in at c3 tonnes and felt it pulled better than the standard car! My advice to all.... spend your money on a transfer box and dynachip magic, it will be the best money you have spent!

You fitted a defender t box to a defender???

Mike is good at what he does.

Cheers

Dynachip did my Defender TD5 as well and it’s so much better, well worth it.
I didn’t bother with the Discovery transfer box as having tried a Defender with one fitted, it made the reverse gear too high.
Had to use low range to reverse

The discovery transfer box is good if you do not spend much time loaded or towing, I have one fitted as most of the time I am empty. But when towing I find the same as @lightning both first and reverse are a little high to be comfortable and you become a master of double de-clutching to change from low on the move.

jsut a question, and it may be me being stupid, but why is there that issue with 1st and reverse in, say, 200tdi defenders fitted with a disco box but not, say, 200tdi discoverys fitted with the same ratio T box?
Are the disco diffs geared differnent or something?

Defender and Disco diffs are the same ratio. Problems come about with Defenders which have larger diameter tires than those on Discos. 1st and reverse then feel a bit high at times,so the answer is then to use low box.

generally large tyre diameter, though 90s were sold with the 205s at one time dont see many now

It is also to do with usage. The gearing is fine most of the time and only becomes noticable when it is fully loaded. Stick a ton and half in the back and try pulling a fully loaded trailer it could do with being a little lower geared. Disco's (as a rule) do not tend to be used for the same duties as a defender, they tend to not be as heavily loaded or tow as heavy a load as often, if at all, as a defender will.

not many defender drives do, i do often with a disco

As the others have said. It’s down to the tyres.

Most Defenders run a circa 32” tyre (7.50, 235/85, 265/75). While most Disco 1’s run a circa 29” tall tyre (205/80, 235/75).

Mph/1000rpm is practically the same for both.

However also as stated. Defenders and pre-Defenders could be optioned on 205/80 tyres. This does have an impact on top speed. But makes for better tow vehciles at low speed.

Conversely fitting 235/85 tyres to a Disco also results in it being slightly over geared, making 1st and Reserve a little tall.
