Yep, alternator ( or wiring ) fubard. Do the same test but with the red probe on to the back of the alternator(fattest wire). If you get a higher reading then you know the wiring is dicky. Most good motor factors have alternator test facilitys, so may be worth getting it checked before lashing out on a new one.

could get a wiring diagram off the rave and see where the other end of the wires go.. it's likely to be somewhere in the direction of your battery I guess... someone will be able to identify it for you I'm sure..

you're doing well so far, keep at it, it's a great way to learn..

right sorry for being a pain but after closer investigation there i dont see how this is possible?
the 2 wires come from rear of alternator then go straight in to a large wiring duct thats sealed this then runs directly into the ecu but its totally sealed all the way and clipped doen in place?
will i have to fully remove all the ducting and wiring completely to trace them this seems like a big job?
You just need to be able to get at either end of the cable, you don't need to remove them.

spitfire? there are 2 wires to the rear on like captive nut fittings that screw on to the rear but i see no plug?

right so thats ohm lol sorry for not being good with this stuff i worked in building industry for last 18 years i know very little bout cars or electrics im trying my best to learn

First of all put volt meter across battery with everything switched off and take a reading. Any reading with engine running should be above that reading.
Run the engine with headlights on, there should be 14.5 volts or so shown across the battery terminals using a volt meter. If the reading is between your first static reading and 13.5 it will possible only need new brushes and a control box, they usually come as a unit around £30.00. Check first though to see if brass pickup rings are ok, if they are deeply grooved and you don't have the means to re-surface them. A lathe. The new brushes will not last long. And maybe an exchange unit would be best.

just to update i think it is alternator as all wiring is good as far as i can see i have got a guaranteed teted one and model match for £45 delivered on parcelforce 24 so what else could i do? will fit it sonn as i get it and see!

not much you can do till alternator is on!!

it will however make things easier if alternator works and you can run it without it dying every ten minutes. it could also clear up some of the other issues!

where you been gav!! lol going out and not helping!!
yeah i was actually wondering with this problem if it might possibly of being adding to the other things maybe!!

na was not me gav im saving phoning you till im feeling like topping masel again and i had a look underneath earlier theres a small rubber hose going from filler cap to petrol tank maybe 5 inches long or something?
i think the drip was coming from that it didint look great so should be an easy enough fix
