Can any of you Landies help me please? I've built an expedition vehicle based on an ex army Bedford MJ and in May this year will be setting off to Cape town South Africa. If you want to know more have a look at the website www.bigorangebedford.com ! However before setting off I'd like to take the truck on a test run for several days somewhere in South Wales, Brecon Beacons sort of area. What I'm looking for is rough tracks to bang it about on, to see what falls off, with some challenging bits in places to twist the chassis, to see if the connecting tunnel between cab and the back comes apart! But I don't want to tread on any toes anywhere as it will only makes things unpleasant for other off roaders. The beast weight 8 tons all up, 2 tons on each wheel and obviously won't fit into existing ruts as the wheelbase is a lot wider than a Land Rover. And overhanging trees would be a problem as I'm 12' 6" high. I've heard all about Green Lanes but would they be suitable? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can't really help with the testing mate, but it certainly looks interesting;);), don't know down south at all, but what about somewhere on Salisbury plain for testing/trying it. There's quite a few lads and lasses on here from down that way;);), who will no doubt be along in a bit and offer advice, take the **** or whatever depending on their mood:p:p

A thing that size, you'll struggle to go down some lanes, but Salisbury plain is pretty much open everywhere, so that would be a good place to take it for a practice run!

Bordon sounds interesting - how do I find out more about it and who do I contact to see if they will allow me on it? Google doesn't come up with much.

that's a nice truck.
i think you will struggle on lanes in wales in some thing that size, the lanes iv driven anyway
like jp says Salisbury plain is pretty much open everywhere

Cool. I drove one of these from London to Harare back in, err, 1990 I think. Very capable vehicle. :) But, build in a daily, weekly, monthly maintenance plan into your trip. Ignore it and it will brake! :(

1990 was it's best year ever! Now it is perhaps a little past it's prime but the simplicity of the engineering has to be admired. When you talk about the "engine management system" what you really mean is the driver! Now then, back to planet earth, anyone got any ideas about test driving on Salisbury Plain???

Simple...
get some OS maps, they show where the byways are and just drive! :)

or... if you ask nicely, some of us from here go there often, so we might all get together to show you around the lanes

oh god!! A Bedford!!!! we have still got these lol
I've heard that the Bedford MJ is going to be kept in service until at least 2012 as the new Renault and Mercedes trucks bought for the British army have not proved to be any good, mostly due to not being rugged enough and consequently unreliable- is that true then? One thing I love about my truck is the simplicity of the whole thing - slow certainly, but easily fixed beside the road by anyone of average mechanical ability and without any special tools.

a pay n play would be better surely, overhead clearance shouldnt be an issue and most are big enough to allow ya 4tonner round.Recovery on a lane would be "interesting"

This is just to thank you for putting me in touch with the All Wheel Drive Club. Spent last Sunday going round Hogmoor, Hampshire, to see what would break and/or fall off but amazingly everything is still intact. here's a link to a short vid on Youtube. Thanks to all.
