Hi all,

I have a 2.5 TD (19j) and I've just replaced my turbo the other day because my old one was spitting out oil quite badly. Anyway, the new one is boosting fine (around 9psi) but I have noticed that my top speed has dropped by around 10mph to 55-58 with wind behind but that's it, the engine is on full throttle but lower than normal speed like hitting terminal velocity (tested going down a level bypass in 5th) all other gears seem to have lost some top end acceleration/speed, it takes ages to get up to speed too. I can't see any smoke in the day but when being followed at night there is a constant bellowing of smoke but it did that with the old turbo and fuel consumption is crap but it has never been good anyway!

Ps all filters were changed a few months ago and injectors were new 2 years ago. Pipes are not split or collapsed either.

Any suggestions are much welcomed, ta in advance.

adjust the wastegate actuator abit.. it must be opening earlier than the old one. be careful not to go too far tho!

Cheers guys, have just tweaked the actuator a bit and its made a little difference, but (as you said) I don't want to over do it! I wouldn't want to go over 70 anyway due to the high probability of my front wings peeling off!

Well apart from chewing its timing belt up when I first got it, there has only been a few real "minor issues" with it, oh and having to buy shares in Shell!
Its been a good engine really. I did buy a Defender 200tdi engine and box of ebay, but it was on its way back within 48hrs!
The rad was rotten, intercooler missing, all pipework was either bent squashed torn or missing, the turbo fins were bent and misshapen, it was full of a oil/mud paste and so was the intake manifold. The air filter was fill of soil as if to indicate it had been sucking in mud/water. And the gearbox had more play than a 3month old puppy on crack.

I will get another engine eventually but it will have to wait till funds allow. I could just get a Disco one for a few bob but I can't be bothered with the ****ing about I would need to do.

I suppose its the cheapest option for the engine purchase plus make money back on the other bits too but I don't want the bother of finding other 'bits' to fit it. I know where I can get hold of a good low mileage Def 200 but its about 1k. Bloody expensive I know but if for whatever reason I sell my 90 it would be more desirable with a Def engine. Plus I don't want crappy Disco bits on my 90!!!

Worth it for the ease of fitting, if you have one go for it. Is there a difference in the gearing? Heard discovery one is better for roads but don't quote me.

I do mostly road with towing then need off road grunt over rough ground.

The only difference is the discos transfer box has higher ratio gears in high range for better cruising speeds (keeps the revs down) that's all.

I shouldn't be saying this but no, I may have to top up around 3ltrs between oil changes (around 10mthly) but it may be less, I think its due for a drop now come to think about it!

I use a litre a month, but doing bout 250 miles a week. Running 50/50 Veg oil so happy enough. Just ticking it over til get discovery set up in there.

Not bad then, I only do around a 70ish a week. A fair bit of towing though and a bit of field work. With your veg oil, do you use straight off the shelf stuff?

Pretty good , been doing it bout 6 weeks. Swopped fuel filter after fortnight just in case. Not going mad with it just being careful. Lil smokey on start up but always was.

I might try a bit then, the fuel costs are just ridiculous now. How many miles do you get out of £20 without veg oil? I'm getting around 50 miles per £20 give or take a bit.
