Hi, still fixing things after the last visit to Piccadilly woods.
Had to dismantle the starter & clean it all out, full of mud etc, changed the exhaust down pipe , the slight blow didn't self cure....
The tensioner started squeaking half way through the day & I think the bearing has gone. Does anyone know what size or number the bearing is please?
It's a 300tdi defender btw.
Many thanks.

Kits on ebay with the circlip etc
Give it a week or two and your wheel bearings will need attention, then a few more weeks and its alternator brush time!
Did you remember to fit the timing chest wading plug? I didnt once and its wasnt pretty a few weeks later

Timing chest wading plug? Er, NO! Never even heard of one!
I'm new to Land Rover ownership & playing in the mud etc, but I'm learning fast.
You're prob right about the wheel bearings etc, I'm gradually working my way around it.
I'm thinking that green laning might be a slightly less damaging way to go than burying it in mud.....

Ok what is a timing chest waist plug Lynall? Now getting to stage in rebuild where I can go off road so now is the time to learn what prep needs doing first :)

I know there is a plug to screw in on the gear box.

17mm hole, 40mm Dia, 12mm width, Rubber sealed........:)

About nine months ago I replaced the bearing on my 300 TDi tensioner because it squeaked - noise reappeared in about a week. I then bought a complete tensioner assembly with a new bearing fitted - this also started squeaking after a short while, so having scanned the net for a solution I found that the answer is to place a 1p coin (or washer) behind the face of the tensioner at the 9 o' clock position and do the bolts up trapping the coin.

I've now been squeak free ever since. Be prepared to drop a few coins as it can be fiddley but this corrects a slight misalignment as the belt passes over the tensioner wheel which causes the noise due to friction. Sounds mad but give it a go.

Gotta love these Defenders. Changed the bearing, started it up only to be greeted with the same Fkn squeak!
I put a thin packing piece ( about half the thickness of a penny ) behind the tensioner & voila squeak is now history!
Thanks for the replies!

it was either a poor new tensioner or other issue you are masking,
