Temp gauge not rising to halfway

Alight Landy peeps

My disco 95 2.5tdi temp gauge is not rising to where it should be, it only rises a few mm and stays there.

Now i have read on the forums that it could be my thermostat, which i can get on Saturday,

My question is can i still drive the landy or will that be a no no.
 
check system is completely full by removing both bungs and expansion bottle cap and filling till all over flow ,feel top hose it should stay cold till engine reaches temp and heat up when thermostat opens,could also be poor sensor or bad connection in wire to it,also when hot feel rad all over to ensure its hot all over to show rad cooling effectively

So long as you've got water circulating your not going to do any harm, use a touch more fuel maybe but thats all. If the thermostat is stuck open tdis take forever to warm up
 
check it ,300s are prone to overheat ,you should do these checks regulary especially before long journey,level of coolant in expansion bottle isnt necessarily a refextion of level in engine

Definitely worth checking.........could easily be a connection or the sender. Doing what JM suggested will tell you if its the thermostat.......it only takes a few minutes running the engine from cold. Like he said if your top hose gradually warms up your thermostats gone......it should stay cool until the engine gets up to temp and then heat up fast as the stat opens
 
Okay, so i replaced my water pump cause it broke on me, and whilst doing that i put in new thermostat and coolant, now i have the problem of my Temp gauge not even moving, i have checked sender and earthed it and still no joy, any ideas please lads

when u earth the wire to the gauge(u better bridge the plug pins to check) at least the red warning lamp must come on... if this is dead too then then it might be a wiring issue.
 
now that i think of it, Where is the sender, there are 2 senders on the thermostat housing, which 1 off controls the fans and the other one when shorted does nothing, and when i went to query about part, they also said it has only 1 pin, so where do i find this sender unit,
 
:doh: .... of course(i was thinking to D2 again) ... so the one with 1 pin is the gauge sender and the one with two is the switch for the fan
 
thanks for advise lads i found it, got the one, but now my problem is this......schoolboy error....i broke the head of the old one, now how on earth am i gonna get out the rest of the old one with out damaging anything so i can fit the new one, also is it still safe to drive it like this.....

I am an idiot i know....:eek:

AAArrrrrrggghhhhhhhhh ... naughty, i didnt do that before but i tell u what would i do:
1. use some good epoxy and affix a nut to the sensor's remained body(if u can do that without fixing it to the thermostat housing aswell) ... if that's not strong enough and it cede then...

2. drill carefully into the sensor as to leave enough "flesh" ,,, then use a left hand (or reverted like the sensor's) screw tap to chase a thread in it... then drive a short screw in it(also reverted thread of course) and turn untill the sensor comes out.... it must be reverted otherwise it'll come out without the sensor's body

That's all i can think about now but hopefully u'll get better tips from chaps who've already done it;)

Well the head broke of and i managed to pull out the spring and plastic like sleeve cover, so now all that remains is the little copper sleeve itself, so will give ur screw tap idea a go, but will wait for the weekend so i have more time, at least i think i can still drive as no water coming out when i start the car.....so fingers crossed
