Temp gauge intermittent high reading

Hi all, was out in my 2001 4.0 RR P38 today, was doing about 40mph and noticed the temp gauge was reading full scale high and the red light on, i pulled over straight away to investigate and it went down to normal range?/ i carried on, stooped after a couple of miles checked under the bonnet and all seemed fine. On way home it done the same thing? also noticed the hevac fault light when i got home? turned it off and back on again and fault cleared. any ideas please

Was the engine very hot when you stopped or normal? If normal think bad electrical connection, if overheated then I would think an airlock possibly due to HGF.

hi, thanks for the reply. no the engine wasnt hot(feel and smell), i have driven the car about all day today and not the the problem at all?? shall keep an eye on it

I had a similar problem.
Watch the temperature gauge & turn on heated screens, head lights & heater full.
If the gauge moves up & back down when all turned off, then its a poor earth.
