Temp gauge and Warming up

Mine only sits at 1/4 in this weather. In the warmer months (do they ever happen). It sits just under half. First winter we had ours i got worried and bought a new stat. Still the same. To the OP i think you have been given some to advice by some who have replied. I wouldn't suspect your gauge, thou as from what you sat seems to working as it should. Either that or there is quite a few of us that need new gauges lol.

It would seem the car is being over cooled in the current climate so as soon as i get a spanner the fan is coming off

I have found generally senders either work or dont work so if the needle didnt move at all then that would be my first port of call

Mine takes 2 or 3 miles in busy traffic to start the needle moving in normal weather then the gauge goes to just below half.

I'm doing short journeys at the moment about six miles in any one direction at a time, and I'm lucky if the temp guage moves of a quarter. I can only put this down to the external air temp a consistent + or - 1 degree.

I did a 60mile round trip the other night inc 20miles of M5/A303 at 70mph and when I got back I stuick me finger in the expansion tank and the water was lukewarm.

in my experience if the heaters only blowing luke warm air and the gauge is low... its likely that sender and gauge are ok. think about removing fans and fitting rad blind
if the heaters really hot and thawing yer frozen feet, gauge should be readin hot and youve got a problem with the cooling system

Right, bought fan spanner from Halfords and removed the fan Still takes an age to warm up but now the needle gets to nearly half way and the heaters nice and hot

Hi yes mines the same about 2-3 miles shows half way up on the temp guage. Its never blown more than luke warm air since I had it. Gonna try back flushing rad and matrix, will let you know how I get on. 110 300 tdi

Yup, my heater is not that warm and gauge only reaches just below half way in this weather, will try a blank tonight on the way to work and also a cardboard blank as a test, thanks for the tip about running the fan slower as well btw.
