How long does it take your 300 to warm up? Now its getting colder i have noticed it seems to take an age compared to my other cars

Had it running this morning for about 5 mins whilst i de-iced the windows and even then it took another 10 minutes or so for the temp gauge to even think about moving (about 2 miles of morning traffic) Even when it appears to be upto temp the needle is only just in the 'Norm' zone

Is this normal as i am suspecting a jammed open stat

might also explain my 24mpg average as well :D

I've got a new 'stat in mine and your times seem to compare ok to mine, start up, scrape ice off, get in and drive 10 mins or so and up comes the temp. Mine settles around 1/3 gauge all the the time.

One liitle point i have found that helps a bit is to set the heater controls to full hot, but leave the fan off for at least 5 minutes - no point in blasting ice cold air through a cold matrix. If you have recirculation, using that for the first 10 mins helps too as its always a bit warmer inside than out.

Just a quick question....whats a rad blind?

also known as a radiator muff

if you temp gauge is only a third of the way up the senders knackered.. pop a new one in and the needle wil go to just below half way.. really.. try it

I thought my themostat was knackered started to move to the first quarter after three miles but after 5-6 miles it is half way guess that is normal. i might put a rad blind on using peice of plastic sheet and tie it off with plastic tie. but the fan blower is quite weak on full etc that normal or it is the fan motor on way out ?

Fan on full is equivalent to a small mouse wheezing. My understanding is this is normal.

Definitely not

I can't run my internal fan on 3 or 4 setting in this cold (-6 last night) as it cools engine too much. Kenlowe fanned and radiator muff,
fan off = gauge at half way point,
full on for 10 mins = 1/3 of way up,
temp of air coming out drops over time as well

Id check you fan motor if I was you

Im having problems keeping mine up to temp too, 94 300 TDi, but then its -11 outside right now, takes about 5 mins of 2000rpm in the morning to get off the starting blocks on the temp gauge and as soon as i put the blower on more than 2 it drops right back down again, its fine once your up and driving about but sitting in traffic just saps the temp if the blowers are on.

Ah had my fan on 4 this morning and it didnt even get off the mark just above the C and the blower was only blowing out 'warm' air.

Switch it down to 2 and the needle went up to just in the 'Norm' area and the heater was warmer :D

That was only idling all the way down a DC at 5mph though in the snow though

Sean, on what do you base your oh so intelligent response

lets assume his temp gauge was working "normally" before this cold weather shall we - nothing is mentioned to suggest otherwise

OP states it's now taking a lot longer for the guage to show a temperature increase, but eventually it's within the "normal" range - it wouldn't take a huge leap of faith or imagination to bet that given a increase in the ambient temperature, or a higher workload that the gauge would be reading well within the "normal" range and could well be deemed to be working as LR intended - all diesel landy engines will take an age to have much, if any, surplus heat in this weather, which explains his comments about lack of cabin heat and the numerous threads that have appeared since this cold snap all related to these same conditions

on that basis i suggested (very polity i thought) that the suggestion that he should get a new sender was rubbish

now then, lets have your reasoning behind why you think he should replace an apparently perfectly good working sender

its based on a couple of comments from people who say that their gauge only goes to the bottom 3rd... at the end of the day it's their choice... live with it or spend the £2.50 or whatever and see that I'm right :)
