Hi, can someone help me please? Should the fuel pump inside the fuel tank work when the engine is running on my BMW engined RR 1995 2.5DT? I know it works when I switch on the ignition but it stops after about 20 or 30 seconds, it then doesn't seem to run once the engine is running. This does not appear to affect the running of the vehicle, so how does the fuel get to the engine when it's running?

Regards,

I beleive there is 2 pumps on the BMW engine. One in the Tank and somewhere in the engine bay.

The one in the tank is the pump that helps fire the engine up, once it is running that pump will time out

Hi i believe you will find that the pump in the boot runs continuosly,if you turn the ignition on the pump will run for about 25 secs and then switches off unless it receives a start signal from the engine ecm,so check once the car starts you should feel the pump running, normally if the pump is knackered the car will run ok until pushed hard at high revs and will then cough and splutter,i normally find that people dont complain about the cars under power but when we service the cars and change the fuel filter we find the car wont bleed out because the pump in the boot is u/s so have to fit anew one,i would suggest that if the pump starts on ignition then its ok but cant vouch for pressure and if its good enough hopr this helps,as i am not sure what your original problem is.

tigapiglet thank you for that you may have answered my problem. Yes when pushed hard I do get a cough and splutter as though running out, I ease off and alls well. My main symptons are that I have to crank it over for a long while to get it to start or switch the ignition key on and off four times then it starts first time. I have fitted a new pump and yes it works for 25 seconds and then switches off, I have found out that it is not working when the engine is running! Could it be the relay or something else?

hi cliffman yes sounds like the pump is not getting correct supply when i replace the fuel filters i remove the relay and put a jumper cable, looking from front of car 1 wire into the 12 oclock position and from memory 1 in the 3 oclock positon i think trying to do it from memory,if you get it wrong will only blow the fuse for the pump, just remember bottom of relay pin 30 main pump feed and 85 or 86 pin 12v feed from ign, just remember to do mirror image on relay, try using the jumper cable and test remember the pump will run continuosly with the ign off so dont leave it running to long,if this solves your problem running wise you could just try swapping relay with another non important relay on fuse board hope this helps, keep me posted
