I have a 2003 TD6. I beleive this is the same engine as an 3.0D X5. I see lots of people with BMW's cleaning both these items and seeing better performance and mpg. How do you check and clean them?

The EGR is a simple device and is simple enough to clean, just take it off an remove all oily sludge using petrol, then dry thoroughly and re-fit.

The MAF I would leave alone, it shouldn't get dirty as its upstream of the turbo, and if cleaning buggered it up in any way then it would be an expensive afternoon's work...

Cheers for the advise. How do i remove / clean EGR. Do I need to purchase any new parts for refitting??

Off the top of my head, no, the EGR has an o-ring where it mates to the manifold.

I can't advise you on removal, other than to consult the workshop manual in RAVE, but if its similar to the BMW 2.5 it will be simple enough.

You may need a new set of clothes after an hour with an oily EGR valve and a litre of petrol though...

Cheers all done. Was not that dirty really. I was expecting it to be thick in crud. There is also a bit of oily sludge where EGR fits. What happens when this is sucked into engine as it builds up?
