L322 What to look out for on 2004 TD6

Hi, im looking at a L322, 2004 td6, which I believe has the early bmw engine fitted to these vehicles.
Its clearly been put on a private plate and had a tdv8 badge added but its definitely a straight 6.
Just wanted to know what weaknesses I need to check for and also wondered what the auto box is like from that era.
There is a dash management light on, do I need a special code reader like I do for the Disco2?

Gearbox is the biggest weak link with the TD6 failure is almost guaranteed along with rust, lots of rust around the rear sills and subframe mounting areas, along with the inner wheel arches behind the plastic covers, best check vigilantly.


I'd avoid the TD6 personally gutless and with a weak drivetrain to boot..

OK, some good points, I also note that my Nanocom can only be updated for later 2010 to 2013 models.
The chap who owned it passed away last year and I am looking at it purely because a member of my family lives next door.
I can look at to value it for me but if its not for me I can at least provide as much information as I can for his wife to sell it on herself.
 
Good points, M57 engine is a really good engine capable of riduclous miles, IF you change the oil every six months and change all the other filters annually including the annoyingly placed breather filter. Also a lot of parts will probably have had to be replaced by now! Bad point is most definitely the atrocious GM 5 speed box...it has to have either been replaced or at the very least had a complete fluid and filter change every 60,000 miles, it is supposedly a sealed unit, but there are numerous service kits available. Other than that watch out for rust in the rear arches, sills and jacking points as well as keeping an alert eye out for 'gremlin' electrical issues that crop up all the time. Even with service hstory you are taking a risk! Value wise you can pick up a 'dog' for £1,000 or so, but you would be paying out big money for returning the vehicle back to everyday usability. What is most important is that it has been used regularly, they don't take kindly to being left unused for long periods of time.

It’s clearly been parked up under a cover for good while now. MOT ran out in May so I can assume it’s been in daily use for a few months since the test. I’ll take some jump leads and garage battery with me.
