Lots of previous discussion on this. From what you say it's one of two things:hi guys when i start my td5 in morn get lot of white smoke and runs like bag of nails for few seconds then picks up. worse on cold days have done head gasget and replaced injector harnes. any ideas cheers all
Unlike me dont be fooled by a five cylinder TD5 having 5 glow plugs......they only have four plugs?, Fiddly but dead easy to do ya self.
Quite a few recent threads on heater malfunction as well! Good luck.cheers guys will try glow plugs head was only done few months ago although im not convinced it right as heater still crap and takes an age to warm up a little
Unlikely to be the block. If you're lucky it's the gasket again. Check whether they used metal or plastic locating dowels. if they used plastic make sure they use metal next time. Presumably they'll do the gasket under warranty. Even if they say it's the gasket, GET THEM TO PRESSURE TEST THE HEAD. Unfortunately cracked head is quite common on this engine. And not cheap to replace (see various threads on this).hi all just an up date looked at water leavel and found header tank to be full of oil great back off to garage to have head off again only done in december im hoping it just head nakered and not block why would any one buy a land rover cant belive the agro and money this thing is costing me

Is it black or clear looking?
if it's black it's oil. It could be knackered fuel cooler it could be H/G it could simply be like mine was that it is still gradually cleaning oil residue from the past headgasket fault out the waterways.
If it's clear then fuel cooler is the most likely culprit. I've bypassed mine cos I was adding 2" of fuel for every 200-300 miles to my header tank. Since the bypass I've done 500-600 miles and have not added any. It cost me £2 for a T-peice rather than £230 for a new fuel cooler. Don't be tempted to buy one off ebay. I bought 2 and they were both knackered.
Have you bypassed the fuel cooler right out?
Remember than the fuel returning from the TD5 cylinder head fuel gallery is VERY hot indeed, and is cooled so that it cannot be hotter than about 70°C when it returns to the filterhead and fuel tank.
It may be almost OK to by-pass the cooler in winter, but I think you may end up in trouble in warmer weather, as the fuel could be well over 100°C heading back to the tank.
After a decent run, feel the filter in the right rear wing. It may be so hot you can't touch it. If the fuel going back is too hot the plastic pipes and bits and pieces may come to harm.
That's why they had to (as in HAD TO) fit a fuel cooler in the first place.
