When looking at Td5's (mainly because i can't find a good 300 for my dosh) what do i need to look out for?

What age is best to go for and where are the usual rot places etc?

Cheers Kat

The D2,s dont suffer with rot !. You come across the odd one or two with rusted chassis, usually at the rear.

Below 60,000 miles may seem good, but between 60,000 and 80,000 they suffer a " mid life crisis ", and need many new parts.

After 80,000 the common things should have been done, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, rear fuel lines, steering box, suspension air springs, ride hieght sensors.

Cars with ACE, ( active cornerring enhancement ), give a great ride, but the system can cause problems on older cars and be expensive to fix.

They are great vehicles, and the TD5 is a great motor.

Chassis certainly do rot. The bodywork may look immaculate, and usually is, but that's no indication for underneath. The ACE will certainly give troubles, mainly the pipes rotting away. Having had one without and one with, the ACE ones certainly give a better ride, but the others ain't bad. Air suspension can (or more accurately will at some time) give troubles and this can prove expensive. The injector loom oil problem may appear, but that's not an expensive fix and easily done yourself. The starter motor solenoids give problems, but again that's awkward but isn't expensive.

If reliability is king in your thinking, then go for a facelift Disco (they had quite a few improvements) with no air suspension or ACE. If you don't want to spend that much, go for low mileage and try to identify one that hasn't seen too much offroad action and hasn't towed big trailers.

The TD5 engine is a good 'un and rarely gives problems. It's just the stuff around it that occasionally goes wrong.

There is a 2001 51 reg that i quite like the look off that has extensive service history and not been used as a 'work' vehicle. It has 110K on the clock, is that about right?

If you work on an average of 12k per year it's below average, and certainly isnt what you would call high mileage. Is it advertised online? do you have a link to it?
If it has sunroofs look damp patches and tide marks on the roof lining. They will leak at some point! I have repaired a couple and wouldn't be put off buying one with leaks, you can generally knock the price down and a good day on them will say a proper repair done.

Rear airbags can and will leak at some point and are about £75 each to replace I think. If you want a 7 seater it should have air suspension. If they have been replaced with coils be sure to tell your insurance company just to cover yourself. Personally I would go air all the way.

It does look good, but I second having a good look and if possible a test drive, or if you can't drive it, have a sit in it whilst it's driven and ask the driver to accelerate hard to see if it goes okay. Also have a squint underneath at the back to check there's no rot. I guess it hasn't got air suspension if it's a 5 seater, but if it has, check it's okay. Twin sunroofs - check them (the front one often leaks and produces damp coming out of the rear view mirror/sunroof handle area or damp patches around the top corners of the windscreen - check there for signs of damp in the roof liner). General Grabbers are good tyres for it. Five grand isn't too bad for a good one I should think.

course it will look good! he trying to sell it, get on an old sack piece of carpet and have a look at the chassis, these cars do rot and **** oil/steering fluid etc out of all sort of small places, sunroofs window seals etc, tarting them up is ok for the garage but not when you've gotta live with it, mend it and mostly pay for all the expense,
that's why i have coincided for 12months, sold our house, new house hasn't got a garage yet till i build it, so i have bought an Audi Quattro 3.0 s line estate
will miss disco terribly but needs must!!

keep telling missus, garage first!!! not kitchen, then disco!!!
