Disco 2 TD5 Wading issue

Hi all,

I have a TD5 auto discovery 2 and had a weird issue today, I waded through a bit of flood water, probably no more than a couple of feet deep, but even with my foot mashed into the carpet the engine wouldn’t rev, and then for half a mile after it felt like the power was clipping, then went back to normal. It was almost like the traction control was cutting in, but it wasn’t.

I am assuming it’s water ingress related but what would it get into that would cause that kind of issue?

I have a snorkel and the air box is all sealed up. I am guessing something electronic but not sure, anyone any ideas?

Do you know where your ECU is?

How deep is the D2 TD5 rated for wading ? and you did 600mm??

ECU was fine, wasn’t even damp. To be fair, the water was probably well below the wading depth.

Wading depth = 20" (500mm) really quite shallow, far more shallow than shown on most Youtube wading videos and 4" less than two feet.
You also don't mention how fast you were going; perhaps rushing water was high and powerful enough to affect the output from the crank position sensor or to flush water into the loom and cause a temporary shorting. If you have access to a diagnostic reader that might give you an historical DTC that explains what happened.

One of the few impressive things about the new Defender is that it is tested to 900mm. They immerse it at that depth for 24 hrs then drive it out. Apparently only 2 of the 84 ECUs have to be working for it to still drive, and, unlike the TD5, they are heavily waterproofed (cannot remember which IP).

Sorry for the bump and I hope you are still active, however did you find out the issue? Got a disco 2 td5 that does the exact same thing when wading deep (bonnet height). ECU is sealed up along with the snorkel so it's not them. I've seen a lot about the crank position sensor, is this possible to seal?

Another possibility is water ingress to the throttle position sensor. Is any water getting to the pedals?

Or the viscous fan is struggling in water which can affect the revs... all kind of oddities can happen when you confuse a D2 with an anphibious vehicle

Not quite, I've had it there before tho and the issue wasn't there.

I've started taking it out now as it was killing the power steering due to it struggling.

It happens a lot easier if you hit water at speed (I know it's a stupid idea), going slow it seems to be fine 70% of the time. My D2 is now just an offroad toy, just trying to find things to seal up to make it go deeper. Got a full sealed snorkel, sealed ECU extended breathers all around up the snorkel, just wanting to see what else there is I can do to help.

Water gets to the pulleys and drive belt which can slip then and the engine management gets mixed up due to the voltage drop, or te water affects the alternator output too... the crank sensor's signal is not ruled out either... be happy as long as the engine keeps running in such deep water cos it was not built for that
