TD5 tweaking advice.

I'm very new to Discovery ownership and would like to enhance its performance a little. I'm thinking of doing the work in two stages and I'd be very grateful if you could tell me if I'm heading along the right lines.

First I am looking at letting it breathe so I'm looking at fitting the following-

Decat down pipe.
Replacement center section.
EGR removal.
K&N panel filter.

Secondly I will be getting it all remapped and thats about as far I intend to go.

The questions,

1. Am I changing the right bits, is there anything that I have missed or dont need to do?


2. Will changing the center pipe to a straight through increase the cabin noise to an unacceptable level as Its a family vehicle.

3. Can anyone recommend a supplier of the down pipe and center section.

4.Mapping, can anyone recommend a mapper in or near to South Wales. I have always prefered live road mapping rather than generic performance chips etc. Or is that fully acceptable on this engine.

i have recently got rid of the egr and replaced the middle silencer with a straight pipe, whilst performance is better it does drone on a bit inside but my motor is a 90 hardtop so yours may be quieter with the carpets and seats

1. Generally speaking you are on the right track and your approach ie better breathing is a good one.

2. When I fitted a straight-through centre section on my TDi 300 it did drone a little, but fuel consumption went up but performance didn't. De-cat downpipes however are, imo, a must.
 
Want it remapped, got to TD5alive or Je engineering, after its done, stock up on exhaust manifold studs........and don't bother with the K&N...

Twisted performance do a nice stainless straight thru pipe, its very drony to begin with, but gets a lot better as it "cokes" up.

Thanks for the reply, I dont want any drone as motorway trips are going to be hard work, how bad is it? should I look at leaving the OE center section in place.



Are you sure it has a cat....'coz the early TD5's dont have cats...

I'll check out 4 alive, why no k&n? No good or is the OE filter ok?

Re the centre pipe replacement, I found it was slightly more noisey but as it didn't improve performance I removed it, the de-cat downpipe however is completely different - big and obvious gains all the way without increase in cabin noise.
 
looks like I can save some cash as my TD5 already has a decat front pipe:)The only sad bit is the fact that I dont have any gain to make in terms of power from that item.
I've decided to change the centre section and see what its like noise wise, the pipe is not a lot to buy and it can be easly changd back if its to loud for me.

So it looks like my shopping list for stage 1 is :-

Centre pipe swap.
EGR removal.
K+N panel filter.

Let the shopping commence.:D


Thanks for the tip on the Front Decat pipe otherwise I'd of bought one of them.:doh:
